You can tell what time of year it is… Another tax return submitted, another very happy client — especially when HMRC confirmed the good news over the weekend! 🎉

A £3,268.67 tax reduction and just £29.50 left outstanding… now that’s a result! 🙌

How are you starting your week off? With a bonus like this one?

If you’re wondering whether there’s money being left on the table in your accounts, let’s make sure the numbers add up.

So… what do I actually do? 🤔

I talk a lot on here about tax returns, bookkeeping, MTD and HMRC… but I realised I’ve never really explained what I actually do day-to-day.

In simple terms, I take care of the financial admin that comes with running a business.

That can be keeping the books up to date, sorting VAT, payroll, Self Assessment, limited company accounts, getting ready for MTD — or dealing with HMRC when something just doesn’t make sense.

But probably one of the biggest parts of what I do isn’t on that list.

It’s answering the questions that come up when you’re actually running a business.

💬 “Can I claim this?”
💬 “How much tax should I be putting away?”
💬 “I’ve had this letter from HMRC… what does it mean?”
💬 “I’ve bought this through the business — how do I record it?”
💬 “Does this look right to you?”

You shouldn’t have to wait until the end of the year to ask those questions.

That’s really what I want KMH Bookkeeping to be about.

Simple. Straightforward. Friendly. Honest.

Someone you can actually speak to, without the jargon and without feeling like you’re asking a stupid question.

And on that note…

👇 What’s the one bookkeeping, tax or HMRC question you’ve always wanted to ask?

Put it in the comments — I might even turn some of them into future posts!

So… how did I end up here? 🤔

Running KMH Bookkeeping definitely wasn’t something I planned when I started working.

In fact, my background probably isn’t what you’d expect from someone who now spends his days looking through accounts, tax returns and spreadsheets. 😂

I spent a big part of my career in engineering and manufacturing, eventually working as an NPI (New Product Introduction) engineer/manager.

That meant being responsible for new products, manufacturing changes and projects worth millions of pounds, including moving products and manufacturing processes around the world.

And anyone who’s worked in engineering will probably agree with me when I say…

It’s almost as much about numbers, budgets, costs and spreadsheets as it is engineering. 😂

But that’s only one part of my story.

I’ve also been self-employed for more years than I care to admit, I’ve run businesses, worked as a weight-loss and life coach, become a landlord and built up my own property interests.

So I’ve spent a lot of my working life sitting on the other side of the desk.

I’ve had to worry about whether there’s enough money coming in.

I’ve had to understand costs.

I’ve had to make decisions about where money should be spent.

I’ve had tax bills arrive.

I’ve had properties, tenants, invoices, wages and businesses to manage.

And I’ve certainly made a few mistakes along the way too. 😂

I think that’s probably shaped the way I now run KMH Bookkeeping more than anything else.

Because when somebody sends me their accounts, I don’t just see a set of numbers.

There’s normally a person behind them trying to run a business, earn a living and work out whether they’re actually doing OK.

And I know what that feels like.

I never wanted KMH to feel like somewhere you were frightened to ask a question because you thought it might sound stupid.

Or somewhere you only hear from once a year when somebody wants your records.

I’d much rather someone message me and say:

“Kev, I’ve done this… have I messed it up?” 😂

We can normally sort it.

And trust me, after engineering, property, running businesses and years of coaching people through their lives…

I’ve heard and seen most things. You’re unlikely to shock me. 😂

There is actually a story behind why I finally decided to turn something I’d been doing and helping people with for years into KMH Bookkeeping.

I’ll tell you that one properly soon. 👀

But now I’m interested in everyone else…

Did you actually plan the career or business you’re in today?

Or, like me, did life take you on a slightly unexpected route to get there?

👇 Tell me how you ended up doing what you do.

£4,828 TAX SAVED — FOR ONE FLORIST! 🌹

A new client joined me recently after moving from another accountant.

When I started going through everything properly, I found that 100% of some allowable expenses had been missed.

Not complicated tax tricks.
Not clever loopholes.

Just a little extra work, asking the right questions and making sure everything she was entitled to claim was actually being claimed.

The result?

A MASSIVE £4,828 TAX SAVED.

Almost £5,000 back in her business simply because we took the time to get the numbers right.

And that’s exactly why I don’t believe bookkeeping should just be about putting numbers into boxes.

Or message me if you’d like me to take a look at your business. You might be surprised what’s being missed.

Yes… sometimes your bookkeeper REALLY does have to ask! Last week I started working with a new client. They’d been using the same bank account for business AND personal spending.

And there were a LOT of transactions to go through. 😳

The problem wasn’t just the extra time it took to sort everything out.

When we started digging into the transactions, it became clear that they weren’t always sure themselves what was genuinely a business expense and what was personal.

That meant their previous Self Assessment wasn’t right because some expenses hadn’t been treated correctly.

And then came my favourite part…

“What was this payment for?” 👀

Followed by…

“And this one?”

…and occasionally one where I really wasn’t sure I wanted to know the answer. 😂🙈

So, 3 simple tips that can save you bookkeeping time — and potentially accounting fees:

1️⃣ Keep business & personal spending separate
Use a separate account for your business wherever possible.

2️⃣ Keep your receipts as you go 📸
Don’t rely on remembering what you bought 6 or 9 months later.

3️⃣ Use useful payment references
A quick description can save a lot of detective work when we come to your accounts.

Good bookkeeping doesn’t need to be complicated.

A few simple habits can mean less time sorting, fewer mistakes, fewer questions and potentially lower fees.

And most importantly…

Your bookkeeper won’t have to ask about your Lovehoney order. 😂😂

👇 Be honest — are your business and personal transactions completely separate?

YES 👍 | MOSTLY 😬 | ABSOLUTELY NOT 😂

Be honest… When someone mentions Making Tax Digital (MTD), do you know what it actually means for your business?

For many business owners, it sounds confusing… but it doesn’t have to be.

This month only I’m offering:
✅ FREE MTD setup
✅ FREE training
✅ Ongoing support, so you’re never left wondering what to do.

No jargon. No pressure. Just straightforward advice to get you ready before the deadline.

💬 Quick question…

Will your income be over £30,000 by April 2027?
⬇️ Comment YES, NO, or NOT SURE, and I’ll point you in the right direction.

Or send me a message if you’d rather chat privately.

Every allowable expense claimed!!?
Sometimes, it’s not the things you think you know you should be paying!

The answer to yesterdays quiz was A

Only £2500 tax on £40k why?

Because he had missed lots of valid expenses and didn’t know they could claim them….

… would you like a review of yours, to see if you can reduce your tax bill… or even past year tax bills!!
