From 1 October 2026, VAT on qualifying domestic electricity bills in Great Britain will temporarily fall from 5% to 0%.
The zero rate will apply until 31 March 2027 and covers supplies that would normally qualify for the reduced VAT rate. Northern Ireland is excluded from this temporary change, where the 5% rate will continue to apply. (ICAEW)
The change has now been written into law, following the government’s earlier announcement in July. (ICAEW)
For households in England, Scotland and Wales, this means electricity bills should carry no VAT during the six-month period.
Businesses and charities may also benefit in certain cases where their electricity use qualifies for the domestic or non-business reduced-rate rules. (ICAEW)
For anyone reviewing household costs or energy-related expenses, this is one change worth being aware of before October.
