That’s why financial literacy deserves a place beside math, science, and writing.
Budgeting. Taxes. Credit. Emergency savings. Investing. Retirement accounts. These aren’t “adult problems” to learn after graduation—they’re decisions that can shape decades of your life.
The Associated Press highlighted how more states are adding personal-finance education in high school; since 2020, nine states had added mandates, bringing the total to 30. The courses cover practical skills such as earning, budgeting, saving, investing, credit, and risk.
And college students are entering a world where money mistakes can become expensive lessons. AP advised students to build a budget, track expenses, understand student loans, establish savings, and use credit carefully—especially paying balances they can afford to repay each month.
Adults are feeling the pressure. CNBC reported that 62% of Americans surveyed by Bankrate felt behind on emergency savings, showing why understanding money isn’t just about becoming wealthy—it’s about becoming financially resilient.
The most important financial lesson may be: money is a tool. Learn how it works before you need it.
Teach a teenager how compound growth works. Show them how interest and credit work. Explain taxes. Help them build a budget. Then teach them that investing is a long game, not a shortcut.
Financial literacy won’t solve every financial challenge. But knowing the basics can help people make better decisions when the stakes are real.
