Life and health insurance premiums may increase from October 1 — here's what's being reported, and why it's worth acting on now rather than waiting.
An official from the Finance Department has reportedly indicated, unofficially, that life and health insurance premiums could rise starting October 1. IRDAI is expected to hold a meeting by September 30 in response to demands raised by insurance companies.
The reported context: following the removal of GST, IRDAI had already permitted insurers to increase certain internal charges. Based on these developments, unofficial reports now suggest premiums may rise further.
Important to flag clearly: this is currently an unofficial report. Nothing has been confirmed by IRDAI or any official authority, and the actual outcome will only be clear once a formal announcement is made.
So why mention it at all before it's confirmed?
Because insurance premiums are priced primarily on age and health, not market conditions. If premiums do rise from October 1, anyone who locks in a policy before that date secures today's pricing for the entire policy term, regardless of what happens after. If they don't rise, you've still bought protection at a reasonable premium either way.
Waiting to see how this plays out carries a one-sided risk: if premiums go up, waiting costs you. If they don't, waiting cost you nothing. There's very little upside to delaying a decision you were already planning to make.
If you've been meaning to buy or review your term insurance or health cover, the next few days might matter more than usual.
