📌 WITHHOLDING TAX: The Tax That Confuses Many Clients 😄

One of the questions I hear most when filing returns is:

"I already paid withholding tax. Why am I still paying tax?"

Here is a simple explanation:

💡 Think of withholding tax like paying a deposit, not the full bill.

Suppose you are owed Kshs 100,000 for a service. The client deducts 5% withholding tax (Kshs 5,000) and pays you Kshs 95,000.

Many people think that Kshs 5,000 is the final tax. It is not.

✅ The Kshs 5,000 is an advance payment to KRA made on your behalf. When filing annual returns, that amount is deducted from your total tax liability, just like a deposit reduces the balance you owe.

Why are support documents important?

The withholding tax deducted belongs to you only if there is proof. Therefore, always keep:

📌 Withholding Tax Certificate.
📌 Invoice or payment schedule.
📌 Bank statement or payment evidence.
📌 Records showing the income received.

Without these documents, claiming the withholding tax credit during return filing becomes difficult.

In simple terms:

🏠 Booking a hotel room with a deposit doesn't mean the room is fully paid for. The deposit simply reduces the final amount you owe.

Likewise, withholding tax is not usually the final tax—it is a tax paid in advance on your behalf.

Don't lose your tax credits because of missing documents or misunderstand the role of withholding tax. Keep proper records and file correctly.
