Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) are the backbone of Kenya's economy, accounting for the vast majority of business establishments and providing employment to millions of Kenyans. The sector contributes significantly to household incomes, innovation, value addition, and inclusive economic growth, particularly among women and youth.
Despite their importance, MSMEs continue to face numerous challenges that limit their productivity and growth. These include limited access to affordable finance, inadequate business development services, low levels of technology adoption and digitalization, poor market access, high informality, inadequate infrastructure, and a complex regulatory environment. Many enterprises also struggle with limited managerial skills, weak record-keeping practices, and vulnerability to economic shocks such as inflation, climate change, and global market disruptions.
