In business, stock/inventory is one of the most strategic things to manage (for sellers and distributors of physical goods); it is, also, one of the toughest and most complicated. It can make or mar your business.

Dear seller, always take stock of your inventory regularly.

Determine/set a minimum re-order level. A re-order level is the point that stock of a particular good gets to and you call your suppliers to bring more products for you. The time for delivery should be taken into account too to prevent stock out.

Before the new order comes in, don't allow a customer clear out your shelves. Customers start getting a negative perception of your place when they come for a product, especially a common one they feel you should always have, and you don't have it. Like a pharmacy not having paracetamol or panadol in stock.

Also, if you manage to run out of stock before the new order comes, get a closer second supplier to supply you a limited number so your shelf will not be empty. This will go a long way in helping you stay in business.

It all boils down to recording everything; yes, every damn thing.

So long as it involves money, record it.

If it involves millions of naira, record it.

Even if it's just a sum more trivial than #5, all the more reason to record it.

It's on credit? Oga record it.

Part payment has been made, madam record it.

As long as value has been exchanged, whether consideration has been received or is yet to be received, just record it. That's the basic step to bookkeeping and data entry and having accurate records.

It will:
1.) Make work easy for your accountant and reduce what he will charge you.

2.) Your accounts will be devoid of errors and mistakes and represent a true and fair view.

3.) You'll be happy.

N/B: When I say record it, I don't mean anything bogus. Just get a book and write it down. Then forward to your accountant to put represent it in the appropriate manner.
