Case Study on Collaboration – The Sports World
*************************

We can draw parallels with the sports world where differences in opinion and approach have had a detrimental impact on some of the best assembled teams in the world.

A case in point is in the NBA. Let's flash our minds back to when Shaquille Oneal and the late Kobe “Bean” Bryant ruled the basketball world winning 3 titles in a row from 2001-2004.

However, when they started having personal issues with each other, it was clear that one of them had to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, and that person was Shaquille O’neal.

This led to the breakup of a team that many sports analysts believed could have won 3 more titles.

Likewise in the Football world the issues that Sir Alex Ferguson and David Beckham had in 2003 is well documented in the history of Manchester United.

When the Coach and his star player had a major fall-out, Sir Alex decided to sell Beckham to Real Madrid, as he believed that the latter no longer shared his views and values, it was important to let him go so as not to disrupt team chemistry.

CONCLUSION – KEY LESSON
The key lesson here is that having a partner (collaboration) is a good risk management strategy.

However it’s important to ensure that you and your partner have a similar view of the opportunity, in terms of the appropriate business model and how to execute the opportunity.

Case Study on Collaboration (Part 3)- The Facebook founders’ dispute
******************
Around 2006 Facebook had gained significant following and the Company’s CFO Eduardo Saverin believed it was time to monetize Facebook & start generating income from the platform

However, the CEO Mark Zuckerberg believed it was too early to monetize the platform as he strongly believed that the company would be best served if they continued to develop the platform and grow the number of users, so as to get an appropriate valuation from future investors.

He believed that early monetization would compromise their ability to innovate and limit the Company’s future valuation.

This issue almost had a damaging effect as Facebook nearly lost a US$500,000 investment from an early investor, due to the disagreement the Founders had.

The dispute got to a point where Eduardo Saverin closed the company’s accounts, while the early investors were conducting due diligence on the company.

This raised a red flag and could have scuttled the ability of the Company to secure early investors, as a dispute between Co-Founders is a risk that most investors are not willing to bear.

The Potential Downside of Collaboration
*****************
In spite of the benefits associated with having a partner, it also has its own challenges. Sometimes, it might actually feel as though you have traded old problems for new problems.

This is because if you have fundamental differences with your partner, in terms of how you perceive the opportunity, it could have a detrimental impact on your ability to execute the opportunity.

Hence, its important to ensure that your partner shares the same values and has a similar perception of the opportunity, otherwise your business could be DOA (DEAD ON ARRIVAL).

In terms of examples the Facebook story comes to mind as the 2 Founders Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin had a different view of how to execute the opportunity Facebook presented after they had achieved significant following on most college campuses in the US.

We will examine this in our next post.
Until then, have a blissful week ahead.

Why You should have a co-founder for your startup
***************************
Establishing a start-up will challenge you in more ways than you can imagine.

The risk associated with start-up ventures is extremely high at inception.

It is therefore pertinent to try as much as possible to make your start-up journey less stressful.

One way of achieving this is by having a partner that will share the risk of implementing your business idea.

Having a partner or co-founder is a good way of reducing these risks, as your partner will be expected to provide a part of the requirements for your startup, such as funds.

In addition, having someone to share the mental burden is particularly important, especially during the ideation stage where you will need to decide the appropriate model for your business and how to go about implementation.
