Freelancer! Before you say that rent money has gone forever, there's something you really need to know.
And no, we're not talking about negotiating with your landlord.
Ada is a freelance social media manager and she just paid ₦1.2M as rent for the year. Money gone from her account. Landlord happy. 😂
Now she's already thinking about how she'll hustle for the next rent.
But there's something she may not know about the rent she just paid.
The Nigeria Tax Act 2025, has made provision for everyone that pays rent. Stating that an individual may claim rent relief of 20% of the annual rent paid, subject to a maximum of ₦500k provided the necessary requirements of the Act are met.
So, if Ada paid ₦1.2M in annual rent, 20% would be ₦240k. So she can claim that relief when calculating her taxes.
You see that house rent receipt? Keep it safe like everything depends on it.
Because you also need to accurately declare the rent you actually paid and provide the required information when claiming the relief.
What we’re trying to say is that as a tax paying citizen of Nigeria, don’t overlook tax reliefs you're eligible to claim.
At Taxidy, we make tax compliance easier to understand, so you know what you're responsible for and can stay compliant without unnecessary stress or wahala with the tax authorities.
Follow Taxidy and turn on post notifications if you want to understand tax better.
And please send this to that your freelancer friend who has already paid rent and is already thinking about the next one. 😂👀
