BEWARE OF SCAMMERS OFFERING DISCOUNT TO YOUR UTILITY BILLS

Scammers pretending to be from legitimate businesses are cold-calling people offering fake discounts of up to 30 per cent on their household bills and seeking customers' bank details.

We have recently noticed that some of our clients have received phone calls from hoax callers claiming to represent utility companies and great discount on their utility bills.

Victims claim the callers lured them by offering a 30 to 40% discount on their upcoming household bills primarily energy, telephone, council or tax bills provided they choose to pay through them.

One of the victims is Australia who claims he has lost $1200 to the scam after the caller offered him a hefty discount on his upcoming household bill.

The scammer convince the victim that he is calling form any legit company (in recent case they claimed that they are calling from i-select company) and offers them a hefty discount if any utility bills are paid through him. He then proceeded to pay victims overdue bills and sent over receipts to confirm that the payment had been made in full. Scammers will then win the trust of victim by encouraging to contact the service provider to verify that the bills have bene paid.

When victim gets the confirmation from utility provider that bills have been paid, Scammers very smartly ask them to check with the service provider if they had received the payment which make them believe that the transaction is legitimate.

The unsuspecting victim reluctantly pays the scammer the discounted amount. later they find that the caller had used stolen credit cards to make the payments which were reversed as soon as he transferred the discounted bill amount to the caller's bank account. As a result, victims will start receiving notifications of bills being overdue and will have no proof of payment.
