Last Thursday was one of those days that reminded me why resilience matters in business.
The plan was simple:
✈️ Whangārei → Auckland → Napier for .
With about 10 minutes to spare before leaving for the airport… cancelled.
🌫️ Fog.
My accommodation in Napier was already booked. Registration was that evening. The conference started the next morning.
After a quick discussion we decided, “Right, we’ll drive to Auckland and catch the next available flight.”
Hope restored.
Until…
As we arrived at Auckland Airport, that flight was cancelled too.
At that point I was frustrated, disappointed, and honestly wondering whether we were ever going to make it.
Meanwhile, my husband John went into problem-solving mode. While I was processing everything, he was negotiating with the airline staff, trying every possible option to get us there.
He managed to secure me the last seat on an evening flight while he stayed on standby, hoping to get on the next one.
Then…
That flight was delayed.
And then cancelled.
By this stage we were exhausted, hungry, and running out of optimism.
So we did the only thing left to do.
We grabbed a decent meal, got back in the car, and committed to the 4½-hour drive from Auckland to Napier.
At 10:30 pm, after one very long day, John pulled into Napier.
What a legend.
Not only is he my husband, he’s also an incredible co-owner of Sort It Bookkeeping, and I couldn’t have made that journey without him.
So… was it worth it?
Quite a few people told me to turn around.
“Take it as a sign.”
“Just go home.”
“Catch tomorrow’s flight.”
But tomorrow’s flights weren’t guaranteed either.
I’m so glad we didn’t give up.
The next morning I was sitting in the conference, right on time, ready to learn.
I’ve now attended my fifth conference hosted by the Institute of Certified NZ Bookkeepers. I’ve travelled to Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, and now Napier.
Every single conference has given me something valuable to take back into my bookkeeping business.
Yes, the technical knowledge is incredible.
But what keeps me coming back are the people.
The wisdom shared by bookkeepers who have been serving clients for 10, 20, even 30 years.
The conversations between sessions.
The friendships that have grown over the years.
And the chance to meet new people doing exactly what I do every day.
Working from home as a bookkeeper can sometimes feel isolating. You can forget that you’re part of a wider profession.
Then conference comes around…
…and suddenly you’re surrounded by people who understand your challenges, celebrate your wins, and genuinely want each other to succeed.
That’s something special.
Sometimes the biggest lessons start before the conference even begins.
