The Growing Future Farmers Fonterra dairy programme is expanding.

Following positive feedback and interest from farmers and students, expressions of interest are now open for a second intake in 2027.

The programme kicked off earlier this year with seven farmers and seven students across Waikato and Bay of Plenty, combining on-farm training with formal NZQA learning to give young people a supported pathway into dairy.

For Fonterra farmer Annalyse Huxford, the impact is already clear.

"It's been incredibly rewarding to see students develop new skills and grow in confidence on farm. This programme has given us hope that we can attract more young farmers and keep them engaged in the industry."

Fonterra farmers in Waikato and Bay of Plenty can register their interest now, and young people aged 16 to 20 can apply via the Growing Future Farmers website.

This New Zealand Sign Language Week, we’re proud to share the story of Joe, a Tanker Operator at our Clandeboye site in South Canterbury.

Joe’s day looks much like anyone else’s on site, but behind the scenes, small, thoughtful changes have helped create an inclusive, deaf‑aware environment where everyone feels supported and respected.

From live transcription during training to simple adjustments in how the team communicates day to day, Joe says it’s made a huge difference.

“I feel like I’m treated as an equal here. I’m the same as every other member of the team.”

New Zealand Sign Language is one of Aotearoa’s three official languages, and this week is about building understanding, connection and inclusion. 💙

Fonterra celebrated its tanker operators at the Transport Operator of the Year Awards in Auckland.

The awards shine a spotlight on 1600 tanker operators who get behind the wheel every day to collect milk safely and efficiently from thousands of Fonterra farms across the country.

One of this year’s Tanker Operator of the Year recipients is Darfield‑based tanker operator Scott Butler, who says it’s rewarding to be recognised. “I enjoy driving – the scenery and the peace and quiet are a bonus.”

Congratulations to this year's winners!

“Being stuck in an office was not for me. Even if I’m drenched in rain, it makes me very happy.”

We’re introducing the next generation to careers in dairying with a two-year programme run in partnership with Growing Future Farmers.

The programme pairs hands‑on learning with NZQA study and support from Fonterra farmer trainers. For students like Janaeya, it’s a pathway into the industry.
