Don't confuse this with cheaper electricity. The World Bank just approved a $1 billion loan and someone still has to pay it back.

In 2001, the government opened up the power industry to private companies with the same promise: more competition, more investment, and eventually, lower prices. 25 years later, we still pay among the highest electricity rates in Southeast Asia.

Every big promise to fix our power sector has been funded by borrowed money, with the savings coming later.

The lower bills (if they ever show up at all) take decades, and usually get swallowed by something else: rising prices, new fees, or the cost of paying back the loan itself.

Binance is officially coming back to the Philippines.

The world’s largest crypto exchange just partnered with local fintech BlockShoals Technologies to operate under the SEC’s StratBox regulatory sandbox. BlockShoals handles the local compliance side, Binance brings the tech. Sandbox testing starts second half of 2026, with at least two years of supervised operations before any full rollout.

Binance was blocked here in 2024 for operating without local authorization. This partnership is how they’re getting back in the right way.

But not everyone’s convinced it’s clean.

Local reports have surfaced corporate documents linking a major BlockShoals shareholder to businesses tied to a prominent political figure, raising questions about who’s really behind this comeback.

Are you planning to use it once it goes live?
