🚨 Is Your Business Ready for Surprise Tax Mapping?

Recently, a business owner messaged me.

“Ma’am, bigla po silang dumating.”

No appointment.
No prior notice.

Tax Mapping.

He thought everything was okay.
Sales were good.
Business was running smoothly.

Until they asked:

“Pwede po makita ang books ninyo?”
“Nasaan po ang resibo niyo?”
“Bakit hindi updated ang entries?”

Silence.

That one visit resulted in penalties he wasn’t prepared for.

The painful part?

It wasn’t intentional non-compliance.
It was just, “Akala ko okay na.”

Tax Mapping doesn’t target only big businesses.
It happens to:

• Small stores
• Online sellers with stock rooms
• Service providers
• Startups

And most violations are preventable.

Ask yourself honestly:

• Updated ba ang books mo?
• Proper ba ang pag-issue mo ng invoices?
• Valid pa ba ang Authority to Print mo?
• Complete ba ang required BIR postings mo?

If you’re unsure, that’s already a risk.

Preparation is always cheaper than penalties.

Before someone says,
“Ma’am/Sir, may violation po kayo,”
make sure you’re ready.

📘 8% vs BMBE (with Quarterly Percentage Tax)
Which Is Better if Your Gross Sales Are ₱300,000?

Let’s compare using a simple example.

Assume:
Annual Gross Sales = ₱300,000
Non-VAT taxpayer

🔹 OPTION 1: Avail 8% Income Tax

Computation:

Gross Sales: ₱300,000
Less: ₱250,000 exemption
Taxable Amount: ₱50,000

Income Tax: ₱50,000 × 8% = ₱4,000

✅ No Percentage Tax
✅ Simplified computation
❌ Cannot claim deductions

👉 Total tax for the year: ₱4,000

🔹 OPTION 2: BMBE Registered

(BMBE = Income Tax Exempt, but subject to Percentage Tax)

Income Tax: ₱0
But Quarterly Percentage Tax applies.

Percentage Tax (3% of ₱300,000):

₱300,000 × 3% = ₱9,000

👉 Total tax for the year: ₱9,000

📊 Which Is Better in This Case?

For ₱300,000 gross sales:

• 8% = ₱4,000 total tax
• BMBE with Percentage Tax = ₱9,000 total tax

👉 In this example, 8% results in lower total tax.

⚠ Important Reminder

BMBE exempts you from income tax only.
But NOT Percentage Tax.

Choosing the better option depends on your actual numbers and business setup.

📘 Which ITR Should You File?
1700 vs 1701 vs 1701A Explained

Many taxpayers file the wrong Income Tax Return (ITR) simply because they are unsure which form applies to them. Below is a clear and structured guide to help you determine the correct form.

📄 BIR Form 1700
For Pure Compensation Income Earners

Applicable to:
✔ Employees earning purely compensation income
✔ Those with multiple employers during the taxable year
✔ Those not qualified for substituted filing under RR No. 2-98 (as amended)

Not allowed:
❌ Business or professional income

If your income comes solely from employment, this form generally applies.

📄 BIR Form 1701
For Self-Employed Individuals and Mixed-Income Earners (Graduated Rates)

Applicable to:
✔ Self-employed individuals
✔ Professionals
✔ Mixed-income earners
✔ VAT or Non-VAT taxpayers
✔ Those using Graduated Income Tax Rates

If you are not availing of the 8% option, this is usually the correct form.

📄 BIR Form 1701A
For Self-Employed Individuals Availing of 8% or OSD (Non-VAT Only)

Applicable to:
✔ Non-VAT registered taxpayers
✔ Taxpayers whose gross sales/receipts do not exceed the ₱3,000,000 VAT threshold
✔ Those availing of the 8% income tax rate
✔ Those using Optional Standard Deduction (OSD) under simplified reporting

⚠ VAT-registered taxpayers are not eligible to use Form 1701A.

📘 Technical Legal Basis

• Section 24(A), NIRC – Compensation Income
• Section 24(A)(2)(a), NIRC – Graduated Income Tax Rates
• Section 24(A)(2)(b), NIRC – 8% Income Tax Option
• RA 10963 (TRAIN Law)
• RR No. 8-2018 – Implementing rules of the 8% option
• RR No. 2-98 (as amended) – Substituted Filing rules

⚠ Compliance Reminder

Incorrect form selection may result in:

• Improper tax computation
• Invalid election of income tax option
• Possible deficiency assessments

Taxpayers should carefully review their Certificate of Registration (COR), VAT status, and income classification before filing.

📩 If you are unsure which ITR applies to you, feel free to message us for professional guidance.

PTPA I came across with a post regarding the topic below. I hope this one helps.

📘 FYI: VAT Registration Disqualifies the 8% Income Tax Option

Under Philippine tax regulations, a taxpayer who is VAT-registered is not qualified to avail of the 8% income tax rate option.

🔎 Legal Basis:

Pursuant to Section 24(A)(2)(b) of the National Internal Revenue Code (NIRC), as amended by TRAIN Law (RA 10963), the 8% income tax rate option is available only to:

• Self-employed individuals and/or professionals
• Taxpayers whose gross sales/receipts and other non-operating income do not exceed the VAT threshold (₱3,000,000)
• Non-VAT registered taxpayers

Further clarified under Revenue Regulations (RR) No. 8-2018, the 8% income tax rate shall apply only to taxpayers who are not VAT-registered.

Accordingly:

➡️ Once a taxpayer becomes VAT-registered — whether mandatory (exceeding ₱3M threshold) or voluntary — the 8% income tax option is no longer available.
➡️ The taxpayer shall instead be subject to graduated income tax rates under Section 24(A)(2)(a) and VAT compliance under Title IV of the NIRC.

⚠️ Improper application of the 8% rate despite VAT registration may result in incorrect filing and potential deficiency assessments.

Taxpayers are advised to carefully review their COR and tax type registration before electing any income tax option.
