Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced the construction of two small dams, Shahdara and Chiniot, to mitigate the water shortage in Islamabad, as reported in a news article on May 23.

According to the details, starting Thursday, the water supply from Simly Dam to Islamabad will be increased by 8 million gallons daily (mgd). Currently, Islamabadโ€™s water demand is approximately 250 mgd, with the city requiring 120 mgd. The CDA currently provides about 70 mgd from Simly Dam, Khanpur Dam, and tubewells. In a recent meeting, CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa directed immediate action on Shahdara, Tarbela, Chiniot, and Khanpur dams to resolve the water crisis permanently. The Chiniot Dam will be in the Simly Dam catchment area and the Shahdara Dam on the Shahdara stream.

The CDA also plans to start work on the Khanpur Dam and Ghazi Brotha project. The CDA Chairman expressed frustration and instructed that a proposal be submitted to address the theft with WAPDA and other organisations.

Lahore: In a significant development for economic and technological advancement, the Central Business District (CBD) Punjab has signed 16 MoUs for Nawaz Sharif IT (NSIT) City, as reported by a news source on May 23. These agreements were signed with 12 top Chinese companies, three Turkish firms, and one Pakistani IT enterprise.

According to the news details, Punjabโ€™s Chief Minister, Maryam Nawaz, oversaw the signing ceremony, which saw the presence of notable figures like Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima and Provincial Minister for Information Punjab Azma Bukhari. The agreements were executed by CBD Punjab Chief Operating Officer (COO) Brigadier (retd) Mansoor Janjua, and representatives from the partnering companies.

Major companies such as Huawei, CMEC, and STDC from China, and Tumas Turk Engineering and Hayat Kimya from Turkey, are among those partnering with the CBD Punjab for development of NSIT City. RUDA CEO Imran Amin highlighted the significance of these partnerships, emphasizing their role in advancing Pakistanโ€™s largest IT hub.

These agreements are expected to accelerate the development of NSIT City, which aims to become Pakistanโ€™s premier IT hub, including sectors for technology, education, and the creative industries like film.

According to the details, the negotiations between Pakistan and the IMF came to light, the International Monetary Fund demanded to impose more taxes and end incentives.

The International Monetary Fund, while suggesting to increase the tax on expensive plots and vehicles, has asked to increase the tax on privileged sectors.

The International Monetary Fund has proposed a tax on the property sector and an additional tax on plots worth more than Rs 5 crore. Sources said that it was proposed to abolish capital gains tax exemption on sale of residential property. The IMF has called for an increase in the tax on the import of luxury vehicles and the holding tax on new vehicles. It should be noted that in the upcoming budget, it has been proposed to phase out sales and income tax concessions and exemptions. However, tax on imported tractors and withholding tax on commercial importers are being considered in the upcoming budget.

Quetta: The Defence Housing Authority (DHA) Quetta has started asphalt work on roads in Sector A-2, marking a significant milestone in the areaโ€™s development journey, according to their official Facebook handle on May 21. This major initiative represents a leap towards enhanced infrastructure, featuring smoother and wider roads, and the creation of a modern, integrated community.

Addressing the ceremony, Director of Development Khurram Naeem Malik emphasized the importance of asphalt work in DHAโ€™s progress. The event saw the presence of Sector A-2 plot owners, who expressed their confidence in the DHA as a secure and reliable investment.

Islamabad: The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is set to implement significant changes in its fee structure for building control activities, following a recent meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Muhammad Ali Randhawa, as reported by a news source on May 22.

According to the details, for the financial year 2023-24, the CDA Building Control Directorate has decided to increase several charges related to building control. These include scrutiny fees, fines for unauthorized construction work, and setback charges etc.

The fee related to land use alterations and adjustments in floor area ratio (FAR) will also be revised, having remained unchanged since 2017. The new fee structure will come into effect from July 1, 2024 onwards, with existing charges applied before July 1 to facilitate smooth transitions. These changes particularly impact land use alterations in Zone II, Zone IV, and Zone V, reflecting the CDAโ€™s commitment to effectively managing and regulating construction activities in the capital city, in line with its urban development and governance mandate.
