UK Expats in the UAE | Part 1

I have heard this quiet a few times now!

"I work in the UAE, so my salary can't be taxed by the UK."

The reality is more nuanced.

While the UAE does not levy personal income tax on employment income, your UK tax position depends primarily on whether you remain UK tax resident under HMRC's Statutory Residence Test (SRT)—not simply on where you work or receive your salary.

The SRT considers several factors, including the number of days you spend in the UK, your work pattern, accommodation, family ties, and other connections to the UK.

Understanding your tax residence status is the first step before determining how your employment income may be treated for UK tax purposes.

This is the first post in our UK Expats in the UAE series, where we'll simplify the key tax considerations that every UK expatriate should understand before making important financial and tax decisions.

📌 Swipe through the poster for a simple overview of how UK tax residence is determined.

We would love to hear from you if you require any guidance or support regarding your tax residency status, bookkeeping, accounting & tax compliances of your business.

📊 Do you see accounting as a compliance requirement only?

We see it as one of the most valuable management tools a business can have.

Many businesses only look at their numbers once a year—when it's time to prepare financial statements, file a VAT return, or submit a Corporate Tax return.

By then, the opportunity to identify risks, improve profitability, manage cash flow, or make timely business decisions may already have passed.

Good accounting isn't just about reporting the past. It's about helping you shape the future.

That's why we believe businesses should review their financial performance every month, not just at year-end.

At The UAE Accountant, we don't just maintain your books. We prepare Monthly Management Accounts that provide meaningful insights into your business—helping you understand your financial performance, monitor cash flow, identify trends, and make informed decisions with confidence.

Because your books should be a tool for growth, not just a compliance obligation.

📅 It's 1 July.

For many UAE businesses, a new month begins.

For others, it's the start of preparing one of the most important compliance obligations of the year.

If your Corporate Tax period ended on 31 December 2025, your return is generally due by 30 September 2026.

Three months may sound like plenty of time.

In reality, preparing a Corporate Tax return isn't something that should begin in September.

It begins with accurate bookkeeping, complete financial records, and well-prepared financial statements.

Leaving everything until the deadline often leads to rushed decisions, avoidable mistakes, unnecessary costs, and compliance risks.

Don't just meet the deadline. Be prepared before it arrives.

At The UAE Accountant, we help businesses prepare their records with confidence—so filing becomes the final step, not the first.

📢 VAT Quarter Ending 30 June 2026?

For many businesses, the next question is:

"How quickly can we file our VAT return?"

We believe there's a better question to ask:

"Is our VAT return backed by complete and accurate bookkeeping?"

A VAT return isn't simply a collection of invoices. It should reflect complete bookkeeping, reconciliations, appropriate VAT treatment, and supporting records.

Filing a return based on incomplete records may lead to unnecessary corrections, voluntary disclosures, additional professional costs, or complications when preparing your financial statements and Corporate Tax return.

Do it right the first time.

At The UAE Accountant, we help businesses build accurate financial records that support confident VAT compliance—not just timely submissions.

Business owners look at their financial reports to see what has already happened.

We look at them differently.

A well-maintained set of books isn’t just a compliance requirement or a file for year-end. It is one of the most valuable decision-making tools a business can have.

Accurate bookkeeping helps answer questions such as:

• Are we actually making money?
• Which customers are profitable?
• Can we afford our next hire?
• Is our cash flow keeping pace with our growth?
• Are we prepared for VAT and Corporate Tax obligations?

When financial records are reliable, business decisions become more confident.

At TheUAEAccountant, we believe accounting should help businesses move forward—not simply document the past.

If your financial records are giving you answers, you’re on the right track.

If they’re creating more questions than answers, it may be time to review your accounting processes.

💡 Not every invoice showing "VAT" means you can recover it.

One of the most common assumptions we come across is:

"The invoice includes VAT, so I can claim it in my VAT return."

Let's consider a simple example.

A business pays for online advertising and receives an invoice with VAT charged.

Before claiming that amount, it's worth asking a few important questions.

Is it UAE VAT or a foreign tax? Who issued the invoice? Does the invoice meet the FTA's requirements? Is the expense related to your taxable business activities?

The answers to these questions determine whether the VAT is actually recoverable—not simply the presence of a VAT amount on the invoice.

Swipe through the post above for a quick checklist before including any VAT in your next return.
