Reviews alone will not get your renovation business into the Google 3-pack.
I know that is not what most people say. But here is what the data actually shows.
Google uses a signal called Prominence and it goes far beyond reviews.
Prominence is Google's way of measuring how well-known and trusted your business is not just to your customers, but across the entire web.
Here is what actually builds Prominence:
Reviews: Yes, but not just the number. The content matters. Reviews that mention your service, your location, and the outcome carry far more weight than "great work, 5 stars."
Backlinks: Other websites linking to yours. A mention in a local directory, a home renovation blog, or a contractor association website tells Google your business has real-world credibility.
Citations: Your business name, address, and phone number appearing consistently across directories like Yell, Checkatrade, Houzz, and TrustATrader. Inconsistency here actively hurts your ranking.
Social signals and mentions your business being talked about, shared, or referenced online. Even unlinked mentions now register with Google's AI.
Google Posts activity businesses that post updates regularly signal to Google that they are active, relevant, and worth showing.
Here is the hard truth:
Most renovation businesses spend all their energy chasing reviews and ignore the other four.
Their competitor with fewer reviews but stronger backlinks, consistent citations, and regular posts will outrank them every single time.
If you are stuck in position 4 to 10 on Google Maps and wondering why Prominence is almost certainly the gap.
The good news: it is buildable. It just has to be intentional.
