We celebrate 4th of July as America’s Independence Day and today marks the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence.

July 4th also celebrates Philippine-American Friendship Day, the day when the United States officially recognizes the independence of the Philippines from American colonial rule.

Along with celebrating our country’s independence, I wish everyone financial independence — because we’re not totally free until we are financially free.

I notice that the older we get, we get so busy on things — whether on active pursuit of our dreams or on nothingness really, things that have no meaning — that we neglect to have those conversations with friends, that remind us of who we are and what is truly important.

Conversations. Friendships. These are the things that last when we can no longer be busy.

Not money. Not a loan.

Opportunity. It’s the most generous and loving gift you could ever give to someone you care about.

You can loan them money. You can even give them money. You’d probably feel good about being able to bail them out of a desperate situation. But I guarantee that no decent human being would feel good about being handed money (pittance) or getting in debt (shame).

If you give them the opportunity to share their dreams with you and support their endeavor — buying from them because you believe in their product/s; hiring them because you trust their expertise; listening to their song; reading their novel; watching their performance — you not only bail them out of a dire situation, you empower them to build a life they can be proud of.

I’ve been in both ends. I am grateful for everyone who helped me in every possible way, but I’m most grateful for those who truly, deeply believed in me and got me to where I am today.

And for those I’ve “helped” one way or another, know that you’ve blessed me with the opportunity to pay it forward.

I got this key chain about 12 years ago when my human limitations would have driven me to doubt that I could even bounce back from a financial setback, so to even dream of the life we have now was just not in the cards. But then again, I was never one to lean on my own understanding. I've learned that no matter how great my plans seem to be, God's plan is always way better. He is also never late, never early, just on time. Praise be to God. 🙏

What does it take to be financially “okay”?

4-Point Check:

1. Do you have enough life insurance coverage in case something happens to you your debts and mortgage are taken care of, the kids can continue their education, and your income will be replaced for as long as they need it?

2. Do you have any outstanding credit card debts, student loans or any personal loans? (Just to be clear, the answer should be “No. None. Zero.”)

3. Do you have emergency funds enough to cover 3-6 months worth of your expenses?

4. Do you have enough saved for retirement or at least on track so that if you lived another 20 years after retirement and you cannot work anymore, you will survive and won’t be a burden to your family?

Next time we say we’re “okay”, let’s think about what it really means.

Financial literacy is not optional. It is crucial and the time to take care of it is NOW.
