DEBT MANAGEMENT: Three Methods for Paying Down Debts

1. Snowball Method - Smallest Debt First

PROS: It feels really satisfying when those debts get paid off, and then you can "snowball" those monthly payments into the next debt. The more debts you pay off, the larger the payments toward the next one!
CONS: Doesn't take interest rate into account. If you have a credit card with a 23% interest rate and a large balance, that's going to add up quickly. You'll end up paying more overall in interest.

2. Avalanche Method - Highest Interest Rate First

PROS: You'll knock out the ugliest interest rates fastest, meaning you'll pay less interest overall.
CONS: Less psychologically satisfying, as it may take longer to pay a loan off.

3. Consolidation Loan - Combining all loans into one (ideally with a lower interest rate)
PROS: Simplifies tracking several bills into one fixed payment. Instead, there's one fixed monthly payment and a fixed timeline on the debt. This can also boost your credit score when you take revolving credit card debt and move it to a loan balance.
CONS: You may risk accruing more debt or having a higher lifetime cost to your debt if you consolidate but stretch out the terms.

None of these methods are wrong - you're paying off debt either way! But taking into account the size of your debts and the varying interest rates can inform your strategy.

Wishing those who are celebrating a blessed Yom Kippur.

While I am not personally Jewish, there are many powerful moral and ethical lessons in the scriptures that I apply to my business. One lesson I learned from Jewish history and culture is the idea of the "Shibboleth Bias," or the assumption that being well-spoken equates intelligence.

When it comes to financial planning, your go-to experts should be the ones who can explain things in simple, plain terms...not the ones confusing and misleading you with complex industry jargon!

It's all about creating unity and partnership in the process, similar to how Yom Kippur is a time of transparency and drawing close to God.
