Black billionaire entrepreneur David Grain is making headlines with a massive $8 billion deal involving Elon Musk’s SpaceX, positioning his investment firm at the forefront of the future of wireless communications. Grain Management, the private investment firm he founded in 2007, has agreed to sell its nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz wireless spectrum licenses to SpaceX.
The agreement includes up to 14 MHz of valuable low-band spectrum, which can transmit signals over long distances and pe*****te buildings more effectively than higher-frequency bands. SpaceX plans to integrate the spectrum into its Starlink satellite network to expand direct-to-cell technology, potentially allowing ordinary smartphones to connect to satellites in areas where traditional cellular towers provide little or no coverage.
Grain, a veteran telecommunications executive and investor, has spent nearly two decades building a business focused on communications infrastructure, including wireless towers, fiber-optic networks, and spectrum assets. Before founding Grain Management, he held senior leadership positions in the telecommunications industry, including at AT&T.
His firm acquired the spectrum portfolio from T-Mobile in August 2026, making the proposed $8 billion sale a particularly significant transaction in the rapidly expanding satellite communications industry. “For nearly 20 years, we have built Grain to see opportunity where others see complexity,” he said, reflecting his firm's strategy of identifying valuable infrastructure investments that other investors may overlook.
The agreement, which remains subject to regulatory approval and other closing conditions, could help SpaceX strengthen its ability to provide mobile connectivity in rural communities, remote locations, and areas affected by natural disasters. Beyond its technological implications, the transaction highlights the growing influence of Black entrepreneurs in industries where ownership of critical infrastructure can generate billions of dollars in value.
