Karen was recently asked to serve on the LPL Governance Committee Advisory Council, which she readily said yes to.
The LPL Government Relations team works to build and strengthen relationships with federal and state legislators and regulators, so we can serve as a ready resource for policymakers on questions related to our business. We proactively seek opportunities to help government leaders understand the value of personalized financial advice, allowing us to explain how LPL provides the tools and services necessary for our affiliated financial professionals to take care of their clients.
Karen was so enthusiastic to get involved that she was highlighted in their monthly newsletter in April.
Advisor Spotlight: Karen Lee
Karen Lee is an independent advisor in the Southeast and founder of Karen Lee and Associates, where she focuses on financial advice and life planning. She is also the author of It’s Just Money, So Why Does It Cause So Many Problems? With decades of industry experience, Karen has seen firsthand how public policy shapes advisors’ ability to operate independently and serve clients. That perspective led her to become more actively involved in LPL’s advocacy efforts and, ultimately, to serve on the PAC's Advisory Council.
Q: What sparked your interest in LPL’s advocacy work, and how did you get involved with the PAC and Advisory Council?
Karen: My interest developed over time as I became more aware of how closely policy decisions affect advisors and clients. After many years in the industry and becoming independent, I gained a deep appreciation for the importance of protecting that independence. When I joined LPL, I learned about the LPL PAC and began participating at a basic level. As I continued learning about the work being done by the LPL Government Relations team, my involvement grew and eventually led me to the Advisory Council. I feel like at this advanced stage of my career, it’s time to look ahead at the future of our industry and see if I can make a difference in ensuring the future continues for the benefit of our clients.
Q: Were there specific policy or regulatory issues that motivated you to step up?
Karen: Independence has always been a major motivator. As advisors, our ability to serve clients in the way we believe is best is never guaranteed. I am also focused on policies that affect investors without access to financial advice, where regulatory decisions can have significant unintended consequences.
Q: How do you talk about advocacy with other advisors?
Karen: I focus on impact, not politics. Advocacy is about protecting independence, preserving client choice, and ensuring advisors have a voice. You do not need to be politically active to get involved. Joining the LPL PAC or the 50 State Network is a practical way to stay informed and support a client first industry.
Q: Are you involved in state level advocacy?
Karen: Not yet, but it is something I am interested in exploring to continue giving back and helping shape the future of our profession.
