Social Security benefits are taxable for federal income tax purposes. Each state may decide how to tax those benefits. The long standing rule is that only up to 85% of the income received in a year is included in taxable income. There is a formula, which includes your all income from all sources, to calculate exactly how much social security is included in taxable income, but it will never exceed 85% of the total benefits received.

The One Big Beautiful Bill improved the uses of 529 plan funds. K-12 expenses up to $20,000 are now eligible to be paid from 529s. Eligible expenses have also been expanded to include obtaining or maintaining qualified postsecondary credentials. In other words, apprenticeship programs and occupational licenses now are eligible expenses.
