There's a tax myth circulating on social media right now that's worth clearing up.

Many people have seen content suggesting that overtime pay is not taxable.

It's not that simple.

What's actually true: 𝗶𝘁'𝘀 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘂𝗺 — 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳" 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲-𝗮𝗻𝗱-𝗮-𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗳 — 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗳𝘆 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗮𝘃𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁. 𝗡𝗼𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝗹𝗹 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗮𝗺𝗼𝘂𝗻𝘁.

And for employees paid under certain union agreements, overtime may appear on a pay stub without meeting the 40-hour weekly threshold that triggers the exemption at all.

I ask because this comes up almost every week in our client conversations now.

Someone found something online, it sounded right, but something felt off.

Sometimes it was fine.
Sometimes the limit had changed.
Sometimes the answer was technically correct but missed an important piece of their specific picture.

Curiosity is great. It's actually one of my favorite things about clients who engage with this stuff. But the verify step matters.

𝗗𝗲𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘃𝘀. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀 — 𝗱𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲?

When we do a tax review, the first question people usually ask is: "Did we catch every deduction?" And yes — we make sure of it. Business expenses, labor costs, anything unreimbursed you may have covered out of pocket. Business owners especially tend to overlook these.

But here's something I remind every client: not all tax benefits are created equal.

A deduction saves you a percentage of what you spent.
A credit reduces your tax bill dollar for dollar.

That's a real difference — which means a good review isn't just about what you spent. It's about whether there are credits you're eligible for and missing.

AI is getting better at a lot of things.
