Why the IRS is asking about fathers now??

When kids are claimed on a tax return, the IRS has to confirm who truly qualifies to claim them. Over the last few years, a LOT of fraud and improper claims happened with:

Same child claimed by multiple people
Parents “switching” kids for bigger refunds
Non-custodial parents claiming kids they don’t support
Ghost preparers filing without asking questions
So now the IRS requires stronger due diligence from us, the tax preparers.

What the IRS is really trying to verify

They are NOT being nosey for drama. They want to confirm:

Who the child lived with
Did the child live with you more than 6 months?
Who provided support!

Did you pay more than 50% of household expenses?
Who else could claim the child.

Is the father:
Living in the home? Providing significant support?Court-ordered to claim? Deceased? Completely uninvolved? This helps prevent the IRS from later saying: “Someone else had the right to claim this child.”

🚨 IMPORTANT TAX REMINDER FOR PARENTS 🚨

Yes, your child can file their own tax return but parents still need to understand the dependency rules 🧾⚠️

When a dependent files a tax return, there is a required box that must be checked stating
“Someone else can claim me as a dependent.”

If that box is not checked and the child files first, it can prevent the parent from properly filing and claiming them later.

📌 Here’s the bottom line for 2026 👇🏽

You may still claim your child as a dependent if they meet IRS rules:

✔️ Under age 19, or
✔️ Under age 24 and a full-time student, and
✔️ Does not provide more than 50% of their own support, and
✔️ Lives with you more than 6 months out of the year

👉🏾Age alone does not disqualify a child.

♿ Important exception
If your child is permanently and totally disabled, there is no age limit. They may still qualify as your dependent as long as the support and residency rules are met.

Too many parents stop claiming their children just because they turned 18 or started filing on their own and that can mean leaving credits and deductions on the table 💸

Your child can file their own return AND you can still claim them if they qualify under IRS dependency rules.

📎 Knowing the rules matters
📎 Filing correctly matters
📎 Protecting your credits matters

Make sure you’re keeping your coins… not giving them away 💰🧾

🚨 TAX MYTH ALERT CHILD SUPPORT EDITION 🚨

Paying child support does NOT mean you automatically get to claim the child on your taxes.

Here’s how it really works ⬇️

✔️ Only ONE parent can claim the child each tax year
✔️ Usually it’s the custodial parent (child lived with them more than half the year)
✔️ The non-custodial parent can ONLY claim the child if the custodial parent signs IRS Form 8332
✔️ Paying child support alone gives ZERO tax rights

No form = no claim. Simple. Clear. IRS rules not opinions.

💬 If you’re unsure who should claim the child, ask before you file, not after the IRS flags it.
