Let's face it...navigating our finances isn't always easy.

But how do we overcome those financial obstacles?

This is my framework to help you identify and overcome financial obstacles. And I call it the "Financial Puzzle."

Now, let’s break it down so we can solve it.

The middle line simply represents where you are right now and the more financially empowered version of you in the future. The circle in the middle represents the obstacle(s) you are facing in order to make financial progress.

Above the line, you’ll see two quadrants - Personal & Purpose.

Below the line, you’ll see two more quadrants - Predicament & Plan.

These four quadrants represent the categories for which your financial obstacle will fall. The reason this is important is because by understanding which type of obstacle you’re up against, you can then develop a plan for how to overcome it.

Lastly, before I dive in any further, I want to point out the bubble at the top. “Lift.” Remember when I told you that we emotionalize money? We have to respect how we feel about money if we want to encourage healthy and positive financial progress. So when we focus on Personal and Purpose-based solutions, we will feel more of an emotional lift in the way we perceive our financial situations. This isn’t to say that working on a Plan isn’t going to move the needle for you. It will most definitely move you forward (as shown in the diagram); but you’re going to feel more of that positive “lift” when you add Purpose-based solutions to your overall plan.

Remember: eventually, each of these sets of solutions will be working together. We just need to start small so we don’t get overwhelmed. At the end of the day, the goal is to start.

Do you ever feel like your money is this super-complicated puzzle that only a Mensa member could solve?

My challenge to you is to consider the possibility that you may be overthinking things a bit.

What would happen if you slowed down and broke your financial goals down into some smaller, more manageable, goals?

We're still going in the same direction.

We're still going after your same financial goal.

We're just taking it a little slower.

Breaking our financial goals down offers us the ability to master the skill of creating a successful habit. It also gives us more freedom to explore and discover other possible solutions that best suit who we are.

Right now, I see society pressuring people to make BIG MOVES with money - with the threat that they will never succeed financially if they don't.

Doesn't that sound like a lose-lose scenario?

It's fraught with peril. And it doesn't set us up for success. It's intimidating. It keeps us from making financial progress. And for someone who doesn't feel comfortable with their money, it's moving way too fast.

Instead, I propose that we simplify as much as we can. Develop a skill/habit/routine that moves us a little closer toward our financial goal.

Then, we add onto it.

While always keeping in mind that there's no such thing as failure, only feedback.

Always making progress.

So here's to you keeping it simple.

Just “keeping up with the Joneses” in Savannah! 🙄

It’s not clear where the phrase really came from, but we’ve all heard it. But here’s a little stat for you ... 61% of the country is living paycheck to paycheck.

So, do you really think that everyone in your life that you think is “doing really well” actually is? You only have a 39% chance of being right.

Not great odds.

The truth is, we live in a society obsessed with appearance and perception. So don’t fall for thinking that you’re “less than.”

Those “Joneses” in your life are also looking up to their own “Joneses” and trying to keep up.

So stick to you and your plan.

Your story is yours. Your money and the choices you make with it are yours. And everyone else around you has a plan for your money.

So make sure YOU have a plan for YOUR money. And don’t try to make your financial decisions based on the Joneses. 61% of them are not what they appear to be.

Anyone else feel like adulting just sucks sometimes?

Have you ever been so on top of things that you felt like a superhero - only to have something else knock you down?

Not too long ago, my wife and I each booked gigs (that's the superhero part)! Then, that was followed up with a $1,600 fix because of a leak in our home AC. And if THAT wasn't enough, the AC in my car stopped working on the way to work. It was only 2:00pm.

BUT ... these aren't financial emergencies for us (anymore). We're prepared for it. Does it suck? Absolutely. But we were okay.

This is why having an emergency fund is so incredibly important. It turns these emergencies into an inconvenience (financially speaking).

Adulting is hard enough...don't make it harder than it already is. Have a plan. And plan ahead.

If you don't already subscribe to James Clear's newsletter, I would highly recommend doing so. It sends out once a week and he always has such insightful, bite-sized thoughts to share.

This one was definitely worth sharing because we are all so immersed in a world that is more consumed with money than ever before. And while money does affect so many aspects of our lives, we can't let it be the only lens we look through when evaluating how we spend our time.

Your time, your "life energy," is too important.

Do this for me...

If I told you I was going to give you two million dollars, what would you say?

You'd probably be pretty thrilled!

What if I told you I was going to give you ten million dollars?

You'd be even more thrilled!

Now, what if I told you there's one catch...and that catch is that you don't wake up tomorrow? You get all the money you've ever dreamed of, but you won't be here past today.

I have a feeling you wouldn't be so thrilled. In fact, I bet you wouldn't be interested in my offer anymore.

Do you know what this means?

This means that waking up tomorrow (not even knowing what tomorrow will bring) is MORE VALUABLE and MORE IMPORTANT than millions of dollars. YOU defined that.

We know how valuable and precious time is.

So let this be a gentle reminder of that. :)

If you've ever wondered why I use the phrase "Stay Curious" so much, this is it.

My wife and I were given this quote when we were going through our marriage prep and have become such big fans of this way of thinking - because it applies to so many different aspects of our lives.

For so many years, I was angry at money. But my anger was all because I didn't understand money. I didn't stop to ask the questions. And I was too proud and ashamed to LISTEN to any answers.

Because, anyone else hate "know-it-alls?" It's a huge turn-off for me. So I avoided those conversations.

I simply accepted my fate: to be forever doomed to a life that was never going to allow me anything close to financial freedom.

But I was wrong.

We are more in control than we think.

So don't settle for being a lifelong-victim of your situation or your career.

Rise up.

It's time.

Now, go get your life back.
