I see this happen all of the time with business owners that I talk to. Bookkeeping is not very fun, it tends to fall down to the bottom of the to-do list. If you're a small startup, would you rather go get that sale or categorize your transactions and reconcile your accounts? Sales and doing the work is probably going to win every time.
Bookkeeping gets pushed aside for, "when things slow down."
The problem is that while you are out crushing it and making money your transactions pile up, accounts go un-reconciled, financial statements are inaccurate and unreliable, your decision making gets HARDER because you don't know if your profitable, and finally tax season becomes stressful and hard because you're scrambling to do a whole year of bookkeeping in one week.
Then you call a bookkeeper and we hit you with a big cleanup/catchup proposal.
Small consistent systems of regular monthly or weekly bookkeeping beat the chaos of catching up every time.
