Guillermo came to me near the end of his first year in his contracting business. He was great at his craft and had money coming into his bank account every month, but he didn’t know how profitable the business really was and wasn’t sure how to properly set up his QuickBooks Online file to get that information.

I was able to set him up a custom chart of accounts, separate his personal expenses from the business costs, and track the profitability of each one of his individual projects. At the end of this setup and clean-up process, he was ready to file taxes on time and begin the new year with a fresh start, knowing his numbers.

He was such a joy to work with throughout the entire process, and it was exciting to be a part of celebrating an entrepreneur completing his first year in business! It's spring cleaning season!

Does your QuickBooks file need a little tidying? Here are things to look out for on your Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss that indicate your file might need a little TLC:

✅ The balance of your bank and credit card accounts doesn’t match the ending balance amounts on your bank statements.
✅ The Undeposited Funds amount is a huge number that keeps growing and never goes down month after month.
✅ The balance of your loans doesn’t match the principal balance stated on your loan documents.
✅ The Owner’s Draw and Investment balances are higher than what you’ve drawn or invested this year to date
✅ Any of these accounts have a balance: Unapplied Cash Payment, Open Balance Equity, Uncategorized Expenses, Uncategorized Income

Your financial statements are what you use to make decisions on how to run your business and to file your taxes. So it is crucial that your numbers on them are correct.

Having disorganized business finances is nothing to be embarrassed about. It's more common than you would think.

One year ago today, I took a leap of faith and launched Straightforward Bookkeeping. Starting a business isn’t easy, but it’s been one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made.

This past year has been full of growth, lessons, and the chance to connect with so many incredible people. I’m truly grateful and blessed for every moment and still amazed at how much can change in just one year.

Happy Monday!
