If your employees earn overtime or tips, your payroll system needs to be tracking them correctly.
New federal tax rules created deductions for certain qualified overtime pay and tips, but there’s an important catch:
“No tax on overtime” does not mean all overtime wages are tax-free.
Employers still have payroll-tax and reporting responsibilities, and only certain qualifying amounts are eligible for the employee deduction.
Restaurants, salons, hospitality businesses, contractors, manufacturers, and other employers paying overtime should make sure their payroll software is properly separating and reporting these amounts now.
January is a terrible time to discover payroll wasn’t set up correctly in August. 😬
