Refund looked different this year? You’re not alone — and there’s usually a clear reason behind it.

A few things that quietly shift your refund every year:

💰 Withholding table changes — The IRS updates these almost every year, which changes how much comes out of your paycheck without you doing anything differently.

🏥 Health insurance premiums — If your premiums went up (or you switched plans), that affects your pretax income and, in turn, your taxable income.

📈 401(k) contributions — Contributing more lowers your taxable income now, which can mean a smaller refund but more money working for you long-term. Contributing less does the opposite.

🧾 Deductions and credits — Even small changes here, like losing a dependent or a credit phasing out, can shift your number more than people expect.
