A ghost tax preparer is someone who prepares returns for money, but they don't sign the completed return or they use a fake tax preparer ID number. For example, they make a Turbo Tax account, and file your return and use your name in the signature block as self-prepared.
Ghost preparers often commit fraud by inflating deductions & credits on your return. Then, they take a percentage of your refund. Thus, the higher your refund, the more they get paid.
This is illegal. And, guess who is responsible for the return? YOU! (the taxpayer has ultimate responsibility for their return). And, since there's no statue of limitations on fraud, the IRS can assess penalties many years back, open an audit for as many years as they'd like to investigate the fraud, and in severe cases, issue you jail time.
In the past, the IRS had a hard time identifying Ghost preparers. Now, they've worked on strategies and new technologies to find inflated deductions and credits and ghost preparer reporting tools.
Stay safe this tax season and don't get TRICKED!
