The most expensive words in tax planning are "I'll deal with it later."

You're planning to sell a real estate investment, and you know there's a large capital gain coming. If we talk before the sale, there are real strategies on the table. If we talk a year after the sale, most of those options are gone. The gain didn't change, but your strategy can change the outcome.

Once a sale closes, the window for most of the good options closes with it. If something is on your horizon, the time to map it out is while you still have room to act.

If you have a sale, a liquidity event, or a large gain coming in the next year or two, let's have the conversation now, while it can still make a difference.

Most retirement projections share the same flaw: they assume a steady, constant rate of return every year.

But real markets don't move in straight lines, and returns that swing don't compound like a steady average. The straight-line version almost always looks better than reality is likely to be.

That's why we're cautious about any projection built on a single constant number. If you have one you're unsure about, I’m happy to give you a second opinion.

Here's something an advisor probably shouldn't admit, but we will: We don't have a crystal ball. And we've never met anyone who does.

If we knew exactly what markets would do next, advising clients would be easy. The truth is that nobody knows.

What we can do is more useful: we can build a plan that holds up across a range of outcomes, not one that depends on a prediction being right.

Contact Brian Stein, MS, CFP®, and he’ll help you build a plan designed to hold up even when the Magic 8 Ball gets it wrong.

"The investor's worst enemy is likely to be himself. In the end, how your investments behave is much less important than how you behave." — Benjamin Graham, the father of value investing

Here's why that matters. Two people can own the exact same portfolio and walk away with very different results. One sells in a panic near the bottom, the other lets the recovery happen. Same investments, different behavior, different outcome.

The good news is that if behavior is the biggest variable, it's also the one you can build a system around. You can't control the market, but you can build a process that keeps your worst instincts from making the call.

If you have $500,000 in one stock, you don't have a position. You have a bet.

If that stock drops 40%, your $500,000 is now $300,000. You didn't do anything wrong.

You just held a concentrated position through a bad stretch.

The reason people don't trim these positions is almost always the same: selling triggers a tax bill, and nobody wants to write that check to the IRS.

But "I don't want to pay the tax" is not a risk strategy. A concentrated position can be reduced thoughtfully, on your timeline, with the tax impact managed rather than ignored.

The first step is just being honest about how much of your future is riding on one ticker.
