Tetra means four. Taxes, insurance, mortgages, investments. We picked the name because those are probably the four worst things to deal with, and the plan is to handle all four under one roof. People now have access to all the information they need to do this stuff themselves, so the suits-and-ties act is done. What's left is what clients actually care about: getting responsive service and not getting ripped off.

Every financial company says they put clients first. Here's how the industry is typically paid: insurance agents on the size of your premium, tax shops on volume when a return costs maybe a couple hundred dollars, mortgage pros on a transaction that happens maybe a couple times in your life, wealth managers on fees. Tetra is adding its last two services, insurance and taxes, and our answer is to show you the incentives. Commissions get disclosed in dollars, and nobody is required to use every service.

The four most annoying money tasks are coming under one roof at Tetra. We currently offer mortgages and wealth management, and we're expanding into taxes and insurance, including home, auto, life, disability, and umbrella policies. As a financial planner, coordinating with outside professionals is difficult, and clients get stuck talking to multiple people. Nobody will be required to use every service. It's a convenience and another option under one roof. Insurance licensing and tax setup are in progress now, with more updates soon.

About three years ago I went into business on my own. Everybody starts with optimism. Few people realize how hard it is to make money outside an employer. It taught me a lot about myself, my marriage, and how strong my wife's support has been. I suspect a lot of people are paying too much for insurance. Not because the carrier is bad, but probably because agents are incentivized to sell expensive policies, which can mean over insurance. Exam #6: passed.
Mortgage exam. Series 7. Series 66. Annuities. CFP. Now life and health insurance.
The application went to the State of Michigan today. Looks like about 10 business days to come back. Then comes the entity license: Tetra Insurance Agency.
While I wait, I start studying for exam #7, property and casualty.

Everyone knows that guy who turns his interest rate into a pi***ng match.

Here's what he leaves out: he probably paid points to get it. A point is 1% of the loan amount, paid upfront, to buy the rate down. On a $400k loan, one point is $4,000 at closing, and it often takes five years or more just to break even. Move or refinance before then and that money is gone.

Lenders like points because they make the advertised rate look low. The real cost is on your closing documents, but most people only look at the cash to close.

I have points available if buying down the rate genuinely makes sense for you. I get paid the same either way, so the only question that matters is whether the math works for your situation.
