With permission, share the business owner's current needs, stage of growth, and the type of support they're looking for. Leave the private details for them to share.

Remember: Share enough to help, but never more than you're authorized to share. A thoughtful handoff builds trust, respects confidentiality, and makes connections more valuable for everyone involved.

One contractor. Multiple payment methods. One potential reporting mistake.

If you paid a vendor by check, ACH, and credit card, don't assume every payment belongs on the same Form 1099-NEC. Payment cards and qualifying third-party network transactions generally follow separate reporting rules.

Before filing, review your vendor details, separate payment methods, and reconcile the reportable totals. Accurate 1099 reporting starts with accurate bookkeeping.

Count carefully. Reconcile before you report.

The 1099 rules are changing for 2026, and updating one number on your checklist isn't enough.

For many reportable contractor-service payments, the federal Form 1099-NEC threshold is now $2,000. But W-9 collection, accurate vendor records, reporting exceptions, and state-specific requirements still deserve attention.

A higher threshold doesn't mean fewer bookkeeping responsibilities.

Review your vendor totals and reporting process before year-end so you're not scrambling when January arrives.

Review your recent pay stubs, project your household income, and compare your expected tax liability with your withholding and estimated payments. The right adjustment depends on your actual numbers, not guesswork.

A little planning now can help you avoid bigger surprises at tax time.

A signed tax return doesn’t automatically mean it’s been filed and accepted.

With the October 15 extended deadline here, confirm your filing status with your tax preparer. Check for missing documents, complete any outstanding signatures, and keep your filing acceptance notice for your records.

Remember, an extension to file does not extend the original deadline to pay. Don’t leave your tax status to guesswork. Confirm it, document it, and close the loop.
