Now that nostalgia for the 1990s (thanks to Hulu) is running high, and in honor of International Women's Month, I'm pulling out this picture of my wonderful colleagues at Emory. My boss, Dot Sparer (right of me below), was quirky, fun, and the most supportive person I knew. This picture and the engraved plate were her idea. She loved calling us the "Dream Team." She was always at the ready with a complimentary note and encouraged all sorts of professional growth.
It wasn't until after her death did I learn her origin story. She was born to Jewish parents in N**i Germany. Her family fled to England then to the United States when she was a young child. I only knew her as positive, nearly delusional at times, optimist. She never alluded to her past. I believe she chose to be a shining light every day of her life.
Stacey (left), Rachel (end) and I may have complained about her exuberance at times, but we always knew she had our best interests at heart. Dot was one of a kind.
