Who else loves Chicago’s buildings?

Chicago is widely considered the birthplace of modern architecture, and looking at this timeline, it is easy to see why.

Following the devastation of the Great Chicago Fire in 1871, the city became a blank canvas for the world's most innovative builders.

Instead of just replacing what was lost, they completely rewrote the rules of engineering.

They pioneered the world's very first skyscrapers, turning the city into a living museum that still defines the skyline today.

What makes this timeline so fascinating is how it shows the rapid evolution of engineering and art over 140 years.

It starts with early limestone survival symbols like the Chicago Water Tower, built in 1869, which famously stood as one of the few structures to withstand the great fire.

From there, you can trace the rise of heavy brick marvels like the Monadnock Building, before moving into the revolutionary steel-frame structures of the late 1800s like The Rookery and the Reliance Building.

These early high-rises laid the groundwork for buildings to climb higher than anyone ever thought possible.

As the timeline moves into the 20th century, the style shifts toward sheer elegance and glamour.

You see the stunning Beaux-Arts design of the Art Institute of Chicago and the grand neoclassical facade of Union Station.

Then come the breathtaking Art Deco masterpieces of the 1920s and 30s—most notably the Carbide & Carbon Building, with its distinct dark green and gold trim designed to look like a champagne bottle, and the massive, imposing Merchandise Mart. By the mid-to-late 1900s, Chicago completely embraced modernism, creating bold structures that celebrated exposed engineering.

This era brought the unique "corncob" twin towers of Marina City, followed closely by the iconic X-bracing of the John Hancock Center and the towering, tiered silhouette of the Sears Tower, which held the title of the world's tallest building for over two decades.

The timeline wraps up in the 21st century with contemporary masterpieces like Aqua, featuring fluid, wave-like balconies that mirror the ripples of Lake Michigan.

Every single building on this list represents a moment where Chicago looked at the future of design and decided to build it first.
