Saying yes to everything kept you alive. Now it's keeping you stuck.

In the beginning you took every job because you had to. Turning work down felt like a risk you couldn't afford. That instinct built the business.

But you're not in the beginning anymore. You've got a crew. You've got more work than they can handle well. And you're still saying yes out of a habit you needed five years ago — not the one you need now.

That's scarcity running the schedule in a business that's living in abundance. The cost is the good job you turned away because the wrong ones got there first.

You probably know your crew can carry more. Could you tell me what each job is actually worth to your business?

Most trades businesses can't — not because the owner isn't sharp, but because the system she was handed only tracks what came in, not what fits. So the schedule fills with whatever called first, and the right job shows up too late.

Capacity margin is the third thing that breaks in a growing trades business — right after profit and time. And the one that quietly costs you the most in jobs you wanted but couldn't take.

Swipe through → what capacity margin actually is, what it costs when it's missing, and what changes the day you get to choose what you say yes to.

Not sure where you stand? The 2-minute quiz tells you which margin is costing you most — and which to fix first.

The homeowner who DIYs the bathroom remodel to save a buck? Calls you three weeks later — and now it costs double to fix what they broke.

Taxes work the same way. DIY your own — or hand them to someone who just files and disappears — and the "savings" come back as a tax bill twice the size it had to be. Missed deductions. No plan. Nobody watching the calendar.

We're halfway through 2026 — still enough runway to catch it before it doubles. A mid-year check shows what you'll owe while you can still change the number.

This week, the Governor stood on stage with the women building Michigan.

Ideal Contracting in Detroit. 150+ at NMU's Women in Construction Day. +44% growth since 2015. It's real, it's local, it's happening right now.

I built Simply Balanced for the woman in that movement.

Many of my clients say yes to every job in the beginning. They're grateful for the work. Then the 2 or 3 jobs a year become 15 or 20. The crew gets bigger. And one day the dream customer calls — the one they built this business for — and they already know they can't take it.

So they try to push her to next year's schedule. And lose the job to someone who could get it scheduled sooner.

That's the gap I work in.

The women I built Simply Balanced for are running the whole financial side of a contracting business without the recognition they deserve. They keep saying yes to every job because no one ever built them a system that lets them see ahead far enough to choose. The instinct that built the business is still running — long after it stopped serving them.

You're not behind. You need more margin.

There are four. I wrote about one: Capacity Margin.

What's the gap you're trying to close this summer? Tell me below.

You can't grow what you can't step back from.

Read that again. Because if every call, every approval, every "quick question" still runs through you, you don't have a growth problem. You have a time problem wearing a growth costume.

The owners who scale aren't the ones working the most hours. They're the ones who built a business that doesn't need all of theirs.

Weekend gut-check: could you take a full week off and come back to a business that's still standing? Tell me below.

If the business can't run without you, you don't own it. It owns you.

Harsh? Maybe. But every decision routing through you isn't proof you're essential. It's proof no one else was ever handed the authority. The work fills your day because the system never caught up to the growth.

The real test isn't whether it runs when you're standing in it. It's whether it runs when you're not.

Be honest — how much of your week is spent on decisions only you can make? Tell me below. Then take the 2-minute assessment and find out which stage you're stuck in → https://www.simplybalancedaccountants.com/start-here

The business is growing. The revenue is real. The crew's there. So why does it feel like the work is everywhere — and you're still the answer to every question?

The Builder stage looks like success from the outside. But inside, the system that got you here can't carry the business you've built. Every decision routes through you, every escalation lands on your desk, and the only person who never gets a day off is the owner.

That's time margin slipping. The second thing that breaks — right after profit margin — in a growing trades business.

Swipe through → what time margin actually is, what it costs when it's gone, and what changes when you build it back in.

Tax update, Michigan contractors: your Q2 estimated payment is due Monday, June 15. That's days away.

This one always lands mid-season — when the cash is already spoken for. Materials, payroll, the next job. So writing the check stings even when you're busy.

Here's the move that ends the scramble: skim a set percentage off every client payment into a separate tax account. The money's already gone before the deadline shows up. June 15 stops being a surprise and starts being a transfer.

The contractors who feel calm about Monday set that money aside months ago. If you didn't — that's the system we build with you, so next quarter is handled before it's due.

Women-owned construction firms are a $22 billion industry now. Up 64% in five years.

Behind a lot of those numbers is a woman you'd never spot on the job site. She runs invoicing, payroll, taxes, vendors — and still gets called "the wife who does the books."
I built this firm for her.

And here's what I see again and again: the business grows, the revenue's real, and she ends up more buried than ever. Not because she's behind. Because the business outgrew the system holding it together — and now every decision routes back through her.

That's not a her problem. That's a stage. It has a name, and it has a fix.

I wrote about it this week: why growth leaves you buried, what it's costing you, and what changes when you build the time back in.
