The women running the calmest businesses in the trades aren't lucky. They don't work any harder than you. Their business is not better than yours.

They're clearer.

They know their numbers cold. They quote from a real number. They know what a job is worth before the crew loads the truck. So the decisions stop being scary — and the weight finally lifts.

Calm isn't a personality. It's a system.

The free guide walks through all four margins — where yours are leaking and what to do about it: simplybalancedaccountants.com/start-here

Hot take: a full schedule is the most expensive way to hide a margin problem.

You can be booked three weeks out and still have no idea if you made money on the last job. Revenue feels like proof. It isn't. It's just motion.

Profit margin is what's left after labor, materials, subs, overhead — and you. Most trades businesses track revenue. Almost none track margin.

So your busiest season can quietly be your least profitable one.

Busy isn't the goal. Margin is.

Be honest — do you actually know if last summer was profitable, or did it just feel busy? Drop it in the comments below.

Long weekend's over. By now your crews are rolling and summer's officially here. I love this stretch for my clients — work everywhere, energy high.

But here's what I watch for every single summer: the busiest months are when owners stop looking at their numbers. No time. I get it.

That's exactly when I want my clients covered — so they can run the season hard and still know, come August, that all that work actually paid off.

Here's what I'm focused on heading into summer: helping my clients build real margin. Not just profit margin — time, capacity, and mental margin too. The four margins that decide whether a great season feels like a win or just a blur.

Run your season. Let someone watch the numbers with you.

Tax update, Michigan contractors: your next deadline is June 15.

Q2 estimated taxes are due June 15. That's about three weeks out — which means right now is when you plan for it, not the night before.

Here's what trips people up: a strong spring can mean a bigger payment than you expect in the off season.

Underpay now and the IRS tacks on a penalty. Skip it to protect cash flow and it just grows into a bigger problem by September.

So use the runway. Know your number now. Time your cash so a June 15 check doesn't land on top of summer payroll and blindside you.

That's what we map out before the date, not after.

Book a clarity call. Let's get your June 15 number set while there's still time to plan around it.

The busy season just started. Which means the question isn't 'are we busy?' — it's 'are we actually making money?' Most contractors can't answer that.

Here's what nobody told you: the problem isn't cash. It's margin. And there are four kinds.

Profit. Time. Capacity. Mental.

You're probably short on all four right now — not because you're doing anything wrong, but because no one ever built you a system to protect them.

We're walking through all four: what they are, where yours are leaking, and what building them back actually looks like.

The guide is free. No pitch. Just the first step: simplybalancedaccountants.com/start-here

Today, we pause.

Memorial Day isn't about business. It's about the men and women who gave their lives in service to this country — and the families who carry that loss every single day.

So many of the people who build Michigan come from families who have served. Today, we remember them. We're grateful for them.

Thank you doesn't feel like enough. But thank you.

Our office is closed Monday. We'll be back Tuesday.

A month ago we opened this series with one question: where are you on the path?

The Hustler. The Builder. The Operator. The Architect.

Four stages. Every one with a ceiling. Every one with a way out.

So here's the close: Which one is yours right now?

No wrong answer. Just the one that tells you what to build next.

Most contractor businesses plateau at Stage 3. Not because the revenue isn't there. Because nobody is sitting in the CFO seat alongside them.

The businesses that break through don't work harder. They get clearer.

Clear on what the business is worth. Clear on where the money is going. Clear on what the next three years need to look like.

Stage 4 isn't luck. It's what happens when the financial strategy finally matches the business you've built.

The women I work with at Stage 4 didn't get lucky. They didn't hustle harder either.

They got clarity.

Clarity on what the business was worth. Where the money was going. What the next three years needed to look like.

They stopped reacting to the year after it closed. Started building the plan before it started.

That's the shift. It doesn't happen by accident.

You've met her. Same trade. Same market. Same revenue as you. But she's not white-knuckling it anymore.

She takes the vacation. Knows what the business is worth. April is a formality. You want to hate her. But deep down you know — she's figured something out.

New on the blog → what a $5M contractor business actually looks like, and what it takes to get there. That's Stage 4. The Architect.

Read this one twice.
If your accountant only calls during tax time — that's the bill. Not the plan.

At the Operator stage, planning is year-round . Not because you have to. Because it's the difference between writing a check you weren't ready for and writing one you saw coming six months ago.
