One of my clients took both weeks of Christmas break off, the same two weeks her kids had.

Here's how she got there. In the fall, she brought me the list of questions she'd been saving since summer. Can I take more out before the end of the year? What about retirement? What happens to the guys in January when the work slows down?

We answered every one. She walked out with four items on her punch list, each with a date next to it. By Christmas dinner, nothing was running in the back of her mind.

She didn't need new software or a new system. You don't need another system to build. You need someone to tell you what your numbers are already saying.

There are about ten weeks left, and that's enough time.

It's Christmas break. The kids are home for two weeks, and this year, so is she.

And for once, her head is home too.

In other years, she sat down to Christmas dinner running numbers in the back of her mind. Did payroll clear? What's the tax bill going to be? How are we covering January?

I love seeing my clients in April. They walk out the door laughing, telling me how much they love getting their taxes done.

Why? Because we made a plan in the fall.

She brings coffee and the list of questions she's been saving since August. I bring her numbers. By the time she leaves, every question has an answer, and she has a punch list of what to tackle before she closes out the year, with a date next to each item.

That's the whole meeting. Her numbers, her questions, and a plan. And come April, there are rarely any surprises.

How do I get my weekends back? That's the second question the Simply Balanced Method asks. It shows up in the Builder stage, when the business keeps growing and the weekends keep shrinking.

Working more hours won't fix it. When margins are thin, you take more jobs to make the same money, and more jobs eat more Saturdays. When the work is priced right, you can say no to the jobs that aren't worth it.

If your March meeting never happened, I want to be clear about something: everything that matters is still open.

I know how October can feel. The year got away from you, and it's easy to think you missed your chance.

You didn't. The best time to put a plan in place was March. The second-best time is while twelve weeks are still left, the payroll company still takes changes, and the dealer can still deliver.
