INTRO TO INDIVIDUAL TAXATION lays the foundation for understanding how individual taxation works in the United States. In this lesson, students will learn what the IRS Form 1040 is, why it exists, and how it serves as the centerpiece of every personal tax return. We will break down who is required to file a tax return, including income thresholds, self-employment rules, and special circumstances that trigger filing requirements.
Students will gain a strong understanding of filing statuses—Single, Married Filing Jointly, Married Filing Separately, Head of Household, and Qualifying Widow(er)—and how each one impacts deductions, tax brackets, and eligibility for credits. This module also introduces the core concepts of residency for tax purposes and the difference between qualifying children and qualifying relatives when determining dependents.
Finally, learners will explore how a refund is calculated versus when a taxpayer owes a balance. By the end of this module, students will have a clear, beginner-friendly understanding of the entire tax process, preparing them for the deeper form-by-form breakdown in the following modules.
