If you bought junk silver at melt price and silver goes down to half its current price, you might lose if you had to sell.

You can still get nickels for under melt. If copper and nickel go down to half the current price, you can still trade them at 5¢ each.

*It is still illegal to melt pennies and nickels for purposes of profiting off the raw metal.

According to Title 31, Part 82 of the Code of Federal Regulations, individuals are prohibited from exporting, melting, or treating any 5-cent or 1-cent coins.

Legal Exceptions
The Federal Register outlines specific exceptions where treating or altering coins is permitted, provided there is no intent to profit from the metal content

Novelty and Amusement: Using a hand-cranked machine at an amusement park to press a coin into a souvenir is legal.

Hobbyist Uses: Using coins for jewelry-making, educational purposes, or minor artistic projects is allowed.

So the penny and nickel will be gone…. So basically, we just move the decimal over one and the dime is the new penny and the $1 is the new dime.

The future of the nickel is coming under scrutiny as the U.S. rethinks the role of small change.

CEOs at some of America’s biggest companies are warning that US consumers are starting to run out of money.

Kraft Heinz CEO Steve Cahillane said some households are now reaching the end of the month with almost nothing left, forcing them to dip into savings just to cover everyday expenses.

McDonald’s has been seeing the same pressure.

CEO Chris Kempczinski said lower-income customers are cutting back, while higher-income customers remain much more resilient.

That means fewer restaurant visits, more people trading down to cheaper options, and families delaying anything that is not absolutely necessary.

Other companies are reporting similar behaviour.

Whirlpool has warned that consumers are putting off big purchases like appliances, a pattern usually associated with periods of economic stress.

The striking part is that these companies sell completely different things.

Food.

Fast food.

Appliances.

Yet they are all seeing the same pattern.

For millions of households, the problem is no longer just that things feel expensive.

It is that after paying for housing, food, fuel and bills, there is increasingly little left.
