SO HOW HOT IS HOT? 90 YEARS AGO THIS WEEK, IT WAS A RECORD SETTER

It's supposed to be scorching hot this week, with daytime highs in southeast Kansas reaching about 100 degrees and heat indices above 105 degrees.

But, that's nothing compared to the heat that rolled through Kansas, especially southeast Kansas, 90 years ago this week. Take a look at the July 19, 1936 issue of the Wichita Daily Eagle, which reported on the furnace-like temperatures that blasted the region.

By the way, the 121-degree mark in Fredonia remains the record daytime high temperature in Kansas history.

Already renewed for a second season, the show based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s books, takes place during the harsh conditions of 1870s prairie life just outside the town of Independence.
