⏳ Tax Day is Here: Deadline vs. Last Day
Today is the official tax deadline, but let’s clear up a common misconception: while it’s the deadline to take action, it doesn't necessarily mean it’s the last day you can ever file.
Here is what you need to know to stay in the IRS's good graces:
✅ It's the Deadline to File OR Extend
If you aren't ready to hit "submit" on your return today, you must file an extension. This gives you until October 15th to get your paperwork organized and filed.
💸 It’s the Deadline to PAY
This is the big one! Even if you file an extension, today is still the deadline to pay any taxes owed. An extension gives you more time to file, but it does not give you more time to pay. To avoid late-payment penalties and interest, make sure your payment is submitted or postmarked by midnight.
🚩 Why Today Matters
• Avoid Penalties: Filing something (either a return or an extension) stops the "failure to file" penalty, which is much higher than the "failure to pay" penalty.
• Peace of Mind: Getting your extension or return in today keeps you compliant and off the IRS radar.
