Do you still take clients to games, golf, or concerts and expect a deduction? That rule changed β€” client entertainment is now 0% deductible.

Meals are still 50% deductible in most cases, but some (like food at an open house or a company holiday party) are actually 100% deductible β€” and a lot of business owners are missing out because their accountant classified it wrong.

This week's Tax Tip Tuesday breaks down what changed, how to separate meal costs from entertainment costs, and what documentation actually protects you in an audit.

You take a client to dinner β€” that's 50% deductible, if you document it right.

You take that same client to a ball game? Zero. The rules changed, and a lot of business owners are still writing these off like it's 2015.

Myth: your side gig income isn't 'real' business income until you make it official.

Reality: the IRS doesn't care what you call it. If you're earning money from a side hustle, it's taxable β€” and it might qualify you for deductions (including QBI) you're not claiming.

09/17/2026

Let's break down the QBI deduction with real numbers. πŸ”’

Say your business made $500,000 in gross income, and it took $300,000 in expenses to get there. That leaves you with $200,000 in net income.

Assuming you qualify for the full deduction, QBI gives you 20% off that net income β€” in this case, $40,000. That means you're only taxed on $160,000.

Are you getting the full 20% QBI deduction β€” or leaving part of it on the table?

A lot of business owners assume this deduction is fully automatic. It's not. How much you pay yourself in wages (if you're an S-corp) directly affects it, and certain business types have income limits that can reduce or eliminate it entirely.

This week's Tax Tip Tuesday breaks down how the QBI deduction is calculated, who it affects most, and a quick way to check your own tax return to see if you're getting the full amount.

There's a deduction that lets many business owners deduct 20% of their income.

And most people either don't know it exists or aren't claiming the full amount because of an income limit nobody explained to them.

This week's Tax Tip Tuesday breaks down exactly who qualifies.

Myth: You need to keep every paper receipt forever.

Not bad advice, but not true for every situation. Lost a receipt? You might still be eligible to take that deduction.

Let's talk about it. πŸ‘‡

This week Walter was featured on The Byron Martin Show from Teknologize! πŸŽ™οΈ

He sat down to talk about what 12 years of owning a business has taught him β€” building a team you can actually trust, being upfront with employees about how the business is doing, and how he's using AI to save himself a ton of time without cutting corners (we're talking 20 hours of work down to 5).

Our favorite line from the episode: "We own our businesses. They shouldn't own us."

There's some evidence and articles that suggest you're actually less likely to be audited if you file an extension. πŸ‘€

Worth knowing before you rush to file by April 15th just to "get it over with."
