The cost of doing nothing:
Bookkeeping usually doesn't get easier by waiting.
A few transactions become dozens.
Dozens become hundreds.
And eventually you're trying to remember what a charge from six months ago was for.

My job is keeping up with your books regularly, meaning fewer surprises, fewer questions and less time trying to reconstruct the past.
Stay current. Stay informed. My job. Contact me.

Why do I enjoy bookkeeping?
Because numbers tell a story. When the books are organized and accurate, you can start seeing things that aren't obvious when you're simply looking at a bank balance. Where are you making money? Where are you spending too much? What's changing? What's working? I enjoy helping business owners turn those numbers into a clearer picture of their business. I'm Brian Hallgren, owner of Hallgren Bookkeeping. Contact me for a free no-obligation consultation.

Congratulations to all you brave and smart business owners! Being self-employed can be one of the most liberating and satisfying things you can do. I want to ask you:
-What do you do in the evening when you get home? What about the weekends? Holidays? Special days? Are you updating your company books on your “time off”? You got busy, maybe, hopefully, and got a little behind in entering sales and expenses?
-Have you been filing extensions to pay taxes? Or paying penalties because taxes were late? -How long does it take you, on average, to add a receipt? Can you pop a picture of it with your cell and get it where it needs to go? “Where did that receipt go?” “Who was that meal with?”
-Really and truly, do you really know what’s going on with your business?
-Are you in charge of the books? Or do you have a paid bookkeeper? How many hours a month does it realistically take from “your time” to update the numbers? What if I could you those hours back? You can sell jobs and grow your business; I'm helping you do just that.
-Are your books a mess? They are NOT going to fix themselves. I do cleanups!
Well, I hope you’re so busy with your growing business that you don’t have any need to worry about your financial transactions, whether they’re entered correctly, whether taxes are paid, whether employees are paid, whether YOU are paid! BUT, if any of this post reminds you that you spend too much time keeping your books or don’t like what your current bookkeeper is doing or not doing to help grow your business, you should contact me and I’ll give you some of my time to look at your books and give you an idea of what it could save you with me keeping track of your business transactions. I’m a Quickbooks ProAdvisor and I want your business to grow. Let me know how I can help you reach your business goals.

When was the last time someone really looked at your books? Not just entered transactions. Not just reconciled the bank. Really looked at the numbers. Sometimes a fresh set of eyes can uncover things that have been hiding in plain sight. If your books could use a cleanup, review or simply some regular attention, I'd be happy to talk.

Construction notes:

Busy doesn't always mean profitable.

This is especially important in construction. A contractor may have jobs lined up, employees working and money coming through the bank account—but still not know which jobs are actually producing the best results. Materials, labor, subcontractors, equipment, fuel and overhead all add up. Good bookkeeping helps turn those individual transactions into information you can actually use. Know your numbers. Know your business.

How can I help you?

QuickBooks tip: Don't let old transactions pile up. One of the easiest ways for bookkeeping to become overwhelming is to put it off month after month. Transactions get harder to remember. Receipts disappear. Questions become harder to answer. A regular review can catch:

✓ Uncategorized expenses

✓ Duplicate transactions

✓ Missing income

✓ Incorrect categories

✓ Bank discrepancies

A little attention each month can save a lot of time later. Clean books are easier to understand—and easier to trust.

Mel Brooks won an Academy Award for “The Producers,” a movie about a crooked Broadway show producer who deliberately puts on a show about Hi**er, hoping it will bomb. “I’m the only Jew who made a buck off of Hi**er,” he later said. His 1974 movie “Blazing Saddles” was recently named th...

Profit isn't cash.
A business can be profitable and still be short on cash. It sounds strange, but it's an important distinction. You can have invoices sitting unpaid, inventory tying up cash, equipment purchases, loan payments, or other obligations that affect the money actually available in your bank account. That's why I like looking beyond a single number.
Good bookkeeping helps you understand both profitability and cash flow. Knowing the difference can help a business owner make better decisions before a cash crunch becomes a problem. Thats what useful bookkeeping should do.

When I was a child, (oh boy, here he goes), we did our best to plan nothing for Sunday except go to church and/or Sunday school, then BBQ some chicken and basically stick around the ranch. Then I got my driver's license and drove away as fast as I could. Now, as I am this age, I like the idea of a day of intentional rest. No force to do anything that can't wait, which opens up the opportunity to read, take a deep rest (nap?) or do a thing or two to prep for the week or do something spontaneous. Maybe you don't believe or do but don't go somewhere to express yourself and learn. That's all good with me. May you have a good day of rest....today or any day. Tomorrow can wait.

Every business has challenges.
But there are also entrepreneurs opening their doors, hiring people, taking on new projects, serving their customers and finding better ways to operate every day.
That's encouraging.
Behind every set of financial statements is a real business—and real people working hard to make it succeed.
My goal as a bookkeeper is simple:
Help business owners have accurate, understandable financial information so they can focus more of their attention on building the business.
Here's to the people doing the work. 🇺🇸
