What is a Balance Sheet?

It answers 3 questions:

What do we own? Assets: cash, inventory, equipment, money clients owe you

What do we owe? Liabilities: loans, bills, taxes due

What’s left for the owner? Equity: your stake in the business

Remember the following formula:

Assets = Liabilities + Equity

If your assets are bigger than your liabilities, your business is healthy. If not, it’s time to adjust.

Being a tax advisor is about more than just filing a tax return. Here are a few questions we hear often:

Do I really need a tax advisor if I have an accountant or bookkeeper?

👉 Tax advisors and bookkeepers can work together. Your bookkeeper keeps your financial records organized, while a tax advisor looks at the bigger picture and helps you make smart decisions.

If my business made money, why don’t I have that much cash in the bank?

👉 Profit and cash are not the same thing. Expenses, loan payments, equipment purchases, inventory, and other cash movements can make your bank balance look very different from your reported profit.

Can I deduct everything I buy for my business?

👉 Not necessarily. A business expense generally needs to be necessary for the business and some purchases may need to be depreciated rather than deducted all at once.

When should I talk to my tax advisor?

👉 Not just at tax time! The best time to discuss major purchases, selling assets, hiring employees, changing your business structure, or other major financial decisions is before you make a decision.
