18 years can feel like a long time. Right up until you're helping your youngest child get ready for college.

FORM co-founder Luke Kuchenberg and his wife have found themselves asking the same question a lot lately:

“Where did the time go?”

It's one of those transitions that has a way of putting time into perspective. The years that seemed so busy while you were living them suddenly feel remarkably short.

There are plenty of practical things to think about when a child heads to college. But there are emotional ones, too: looking back on the memories you've made, adjusting to a new chapter at home and looking forward to the relationship you'll have with your children as adults.

At FORM, the “F” stands for Family because family is so often the reason behind the financial decisions we help people make. Wealth can provide choices and opportunities.

The people you share them with are what give those choices meaning.

Does a sophisticated investment strategy have to be complicated? We don't think so.

It's one reason index ETFs play an important role in many of the portfolios we build at FORM.

Your portfolio isn't there to be interesting. It has a job: to help support your lifestyle, retirement, family, future goals and legacy.

Index exchange-traded funds, or ETFs, allow investors to gain exposure to many securities through a single investment. Depending on the fund, that can mean hundreds or even thousands of individual holdings.

They can also offer advantages including broad diversification, relatively low costs, tax efficiency and flexibility.

But the investment itself is only part of the equation.

At FORM, we build portfolios within a larger financial plan. One that considers your circumstances, income needs, time horizon, goals, and tolerance for risk.

Markets will change. Headlines will change.

A disciplined investment strategy shouldn't have to change with them.

A strong golf game, a new needlepoint hobby, and a desire to help people through life’s biggest milestones...There’s more to Halle Bichler than her finance major.

After discovering FORM’s internship opportunity on LinkedIn, Halle joined our Lake Geneva office for the summer and now the fall.

Halle grew up near Sheboygan as the youngest of three sisters and remains a loyal Brewers fan. She has also volunteered at Whitewater High School, leading finance strategy discussions with students.

What has stood out most during her internship? “My favorite thing about being at FORM is seeing first-hand how the team lives the promises they make to clients every day.”

Halle hopes to build a career helping people in meaningful ways and being there for their biggest milestones. As she prepares to graduate in December, we’re grateful to have a little more time with her and eager to see where that sense of purpose takes her.

If you’re in our Lake Geneva office this fall, be sure to say hello to Halle at the front desk. We’re glad to have her with us!

The financial habits and fears we develop early in life often stay with us, even as our wealth grows.

You may have spent decades building financial security, yet still find yourself worrying about a $100 expense or an unexpected bill.

In our latest Compare to What, Tyson discusses why our mindset doesn’t always keep pace with our financial success, and how understanding what your wealth can actually do for you can help you move from financial stress to greater confidence.

Because building wealth is one thing. Learning to enjoy the security you’ve worked so hard to create is another.

You spot a transaction you don't recognize. Now what?

When personal or financial information may have been compromised, knowing what to do next can help you act quickly.

Some of the first steps to consider include:
1. Review your financial accounts for other unfamiliar activity
2. Contact affected banks, credit card companies or financial institutions
3. Change compromised passwords and strengthen account security
4. Consider placing a credit freeze with each of the three major credit bureaus
5. Review your credit reports for accounts or activity you don't recognize
6. Visit IdentityTheft.gov for additional guidance and reporting resources

And don't overlook your investment accounts.

If you believe an account connected to your relationship with FORM may be affected, or you're simply unsure about communication you've received, contact us.

When something involving your financial information doesn't look right, don't wait to investigate.

Why does the Fed raise interest rates when the economy is doing well?

In this clip from our latest Up or Down video, Tyson breaks down how interest rate decisions are used to manage inflation, slow spending and investment, and keep the economy in balance.

Understanding the reasoning behind these decisions can help put market movements into perspective.

What’s the point of working hard to build a life if you never make time to enjoy it?

At FORM, the “R” stands for Recreation, and we believe enjoying what you've worked hard to build is an important part of a well-lived life.

That idea takes center stage in our Fall InFORMational newsletter.

We're sharing stories about how members of the FORM team make time for the people, places and activities they enjoy outside the office. You'll also find our team's favorite fall chili recipe, along with several financial considerations to keep in mind as year-end approaches.

Clients, keep an eye on your mailbox for your copy.

Not a FORM client? We’d love to share it with you. Comment “FALL” below, and we’ll send a digital copy directly to you.

Planning a big purchase? Your wealth advisor should probably know about it before your checkbook does.

A second home. A major renovation. A child's wedding. Helping with a down payment.

In recognition of World Financial Planning Day, we're sharing a reminder that good financial planning includes thoughtfully planning for the life you're living now.

Some of life's bigger expenses are exciting to plan for, and where the money comes from can matter just as much as what you're spending it on.

If you know a significant expense may be ahead, consider starting the conversation with your advisor well before you need the money.

A few things to think through:

1. Define the goal. What are you planning for, and what might it realistically cost?
2. Give yourself time. Planning well in advance can give you and your advisor more options for determining where the money should come from.
3. Protect your reserves. A major purchase shouldn't unintentionally leave you without the liquidity you need elsewhere.
4. Consider the ripple effects. Helping one child financially, for example, may influence what you'd like to do for another in the future.

A major expense isn't simply a withdrawal from an account. It's one decision within a much larger financial life.
