"I don't know what category this goes in" is one of the most common things I hear from business owners.

Here's the truth: you don't have to know instantly. But when you're staring at a transaction and the guessing spiral starts, here's how to break it:

Ask "why," not "what." A laptop for client work and a laptop for your kid's homeschool are the same item — different purposes, different categories. The purpose decides it, not the item.
When two categories fit, pick the more specific one. "Equipment" or "Computer and Internet Expenses" beats "Office Expenses" when that's really what it is. Specific categories give you better insight down the road.

Create an "Ask My Bookkeeper" bucket. Don't let one weird transaction stall your whole month. Park it, keep moving, and let it get sorted at reconciliation.
Leave yourself a note in the memo section. "Client lunch — discussed Q3 project" takes five seconds and saves ten minutes of guessing later.

Bookkeeping isn't about getting it perfect in the moment. It's about being consistent enough that the picture is still accurate at the end of the month.

If your "Uncategorized" tab is full of question marks, that's not a personal failing — it just means you need a system (or a bookkeeper who already has one).

Sometimes life doesn't go the way we expected—and that's not always a setback. Sometimes it's a redirection toward something better.

I experienced that firsthand when I left a toxic workplace. At the time, I didn't know exactly what was next, but that unexpected ending opened the door to something I never anticipated: becoming a bookkeeper and building JPurcell Bookkeeping.
