Linda was shocked when 15% of her Social Security disappeared each month. Living on a fixed income, she couldn’t afford it.
By applying for hardship status (CNC), she proved she couldn’t pay. The IRS lifted the levy, and Linda kept her benefits.

If you're self-employed and claim a home-office deduction, here's something you may not know. You, your spouse or your children could accidentally cause you to lose the deduction.

Let's say you have a home office that you use exclusively for your business. One evening you, your spouse, or your children sit at your desk to pay household bills or do a little online shopping.

Seems harmless, right?

Unfortunately, you may now have personal use of a space that is supposed to be used exclusively for your business.

The same problem can happen if you have a W-2 job and use your business home office to do work for your employer. The employee home-office deduction is no longer available on your personal return, and that nonqualifying use could jeopardize the deduction for your self-employed business.

Have two businesses? Each business use of the office needs to qualify.

The good news is that a room can by physically divided. If your half is used exclusively for your qualifying business and your spouse or children use the other half, their use of their portion doesn't necessarily ruin your deduction.

And there's another reason to pay attention to this rule. Losing your qualifying home office could also affect the deductibility of some of your business mileage.

Tax lesson: If you claim a home-office deduction, protect your business space!

Missed an IRA required minimum distribution? Before you panic, take a breath.

The additional tax for missing an RMD can be 25% of the amount you should have withdrawn.
However, that may not be the end of the story. The rate may be reduced when the mistake is corrected within the applicable correction window, and the IRS may waive part or all of the additional tax when the shortfall resulted from a reasonable error, and you are taking steps to fix it.

Correcting the problem generally begins with taking the missed distribution. You may also need to file Form 5329 and attach an honest explanation of what happened, what you did to correct it, and how you plan to prevent it from happening again.

Missing an RMD doesn’t mean you are careless. Retirement rules are confusing, and life happens.

The important thing is not to ignore it.

Remember the truck transmission saga I shared with you? Well, it wasn't quite over.

I recently had a completely unrelated repair done on my truck. After picking it up, I headed to Montana for my 40-year class reunion.

When I arrived, something didn't feel quite right, but I had a reunion to get to and didn't think about it again.

The next morning, I discovered my truck had somehow shifted itself into four-wheel drive, and refused to come back out.

Thankfully, a local shop found the problem in just a short time.

The fix?

Two clips hadn't been seated correctly during the previous transmission installation. Even better, they fixed it and didn't charge me a dime.

That experience reminded me why hiring the right professional the first time matters.

The same lesson applies to IRS problems.

Choosing the wrong representative can end up costing you far more in money, time, and frustration than doing a little research up front.

In this week's blog, I share the latest chapter in my truck saga and how it relates to finding the right person to help with an IRS problem.

At first, waiting to take care of a problem doesn't sound like a problem. But in this case, it changed everything.

One of my clients owed the IRS more than $95,000 and wanted to lower the monthly payment the IRS was requesting. I explained that we could submit financial information to see if the IRS would allow a smaller payment.

Everything was ready to go to the IRS. Then he asked me to stop.

His concern?

He didn't want his new wife's financial information included in the paperwork because it wasn't her tax debt.

Unfortunately, once you're married, the IRS looks at the household's financial situation when evaluating many collection options.

After talking it over, he and his wife decided to accept the IRS payment plan instead.

Could the outcome have been different?

Possibly.

If he had started the process before getting married, we may have been able to request a lower payment based only on his finances. There's no guarantee the IRS would have approved it, but it would have given us that opportunity.

IRS Lesson: Major life events can affect your IRS resolution options. Sometimes timing is just as important as the solution itself.

Have you ever put off dealing with something important only to realize later that the timing mattered?
