Most business owners know they should look at their Profit & Loss statement (P&L), but how often are you actually reviewing it?

Your P&L is more than just a report for tax time. It's the story of your business.

It tells you:
✔️ How much revenue you're generating
✔️ Where your money is being spent
✔️ If expenses are increasing faster than sales
✔️ Which areas of your business are most profitable
✔️ Whether you're actually making money or just staying busy

Reviewing your P&L monthly allows you to spot trends before they become problems. Maybe payroll costs are creeping up. Maybe your advertising is producing great results. Maybe your profit margin is shrinking and you didn't even realize it.

The business owners who make the best decisions aren't guessing—they're using their numbers.

So I'm curious...

📊 How often do you review your P&L?
• Monthly
• Quarterly
• At tax time
• What's a P&L? 😅

"Do you know your KPIs?"

Most business owners can tell you how much money is in their bank account. Far fewer can tell you their profit margin, customer acquisition cost, or how many months of expenses their cash reserves can cover.

Your financial statements tell a story, but KPIs help you understand what that story means and where your business is headed.

If you don't know your KPIs, you're making decisions based on guesses instead of data.

What is the ONE number you track most closely in your business?

One of the hardest parts of being a business owner isn't the work itself—it's staying focused on the long game.

Every day we're faced with choices between immediate gratification and long-term success. Do we take the shortcut, or do we invest the extra time and effort into building something sustainable? Do we spend money on things that make us feel successful today, or invest in tools, systems, and people that will help us grow tomorrow?

The truth is, most successful businesses aren't built overnight. They're built through consistent decisions made day after day, even when the payoff isn't immediate.

My strategy? I remind myself of my bigger vision and ask, "Will this decision help me get there?" If the answer is yes, I keep moving forward—even when progress feels slow.

I'd love to hear from other business owners: How do you keep yourself focused on the long term and avoid getting distracted by short-term wins or setbacks?

Recently, I had the opportunity to sit down with a friend who was significantly undercharging for the services she provides.

For years, I had encouraged her to raise her rates, but like many business owners, she was worried. She didn't want to lose clients or put additional strain on their budgets because, let's face it, life feels expensive right now.

Finally, I asked if I could help her work through her pricing, and she said yes.

After doing some research and comparing her rates to others in her industry, she was shocked. With over 30 years of experience, she was still charging rates that looked more like someone just starting their career.

Together, we built a pricing structure that accounted for self-employment taxes, retirement savings, paid time off, health expenses, and a reasonable income—while still remaining competitive in her market.

When we finished, she looked at me and said, "I didn't even know this was possible."

As a bookkeeper, I love helping clients understand their numbers. But moments like this remind me that numbers aren't just numbers—they create opportunities, reduce stress, and help business owners build the life they envisioned when they started their business.

So let me ask you:

Is your pricing structure actually working for you, or are you working hard to support everyone except yourself?

If you're not sure whether your pricing supports your goals, let's talk. Sometimes a simple conversation can uncover opportunities you didn't even know were possible.

What Is Your Profit & Loss Statement Telling You?

Your Profit & Loss (P&L) report is more than just numbers on a page—it's the story of your business.

A P&L helps you answer important questions like:

✅ How much revenue did my business generate?

✅ Are my sales increasing or decreasing?
(I really like the profit & loss by month report in QB for this)

✅ What are my biggest expenses?

✅ Am I actually making a profit?

✅ Is my pricing covering my costs?

✅ Where can I cut unnecessary spending?

✅ How does this month compare to last month?

✅ Am I on track to meet my goals?

Without accurate bookkeeping, your Profit & Loss report is just a guess. With clean books and timely reporting, it becomes a powerful decision-making tool.

At All About Numberz Bookkeeping, we help business owners turn financial transactions into meaningful information so they can make informed business decisions.

🧐Do you review your Profit & Loss statement every month?

Bookkeeping Tip: Separate Business and Personal Finances

If I could give every business owner just one piece of bookkeeping advice, it would be this:

Keep your business and personal finances separate.

It sounds simple, but I can't say it enough. Mixing personal and business transactions is one of the most common issues I see when working with new clients, and it creates unnecessary headaches all year long.

Every personal expense charged to a business account (or vice versa) means more time sorting through transactions, more room for errors, and less accurate financial reports. When your finances are mixed together, it's difficult to know how your business is truly performing.

The good news? It's incredibly easy to keep things separate.

Need money from your business for personal use? Simply transfer the funds from your business account to your personal account and record it properly. That's much cleaner than paying personal bills directly from your business account and trying to untangle everything later.

Separate accounts help you:
✔️ Keep accurate financial records
✔️ Simplify tax preparation
✔️ Reduce bookkeeping costs
✔️ Understand your true profitability
✔️ Make better business decisions

As business owners, we work hard for our money. We deserve financial reports we can trust. Keeping business and personal expenses separate is one of the easiest ways to create that clarity.

Trust me—your bookkeeper, accountant, and future self will thank you.

This topic is one of my favorites because it solves so many bookkeeping problems before they start. It's a simple habit that can save business owners hours of frustration and hundreds of dollars in cleanup work later.
