🚀☢️ Elon Musk's SpaceX Launches the World's First Commercial Nuclear-Powered Satellite
A new chapter in space technology has begun.
SpaceX has successfully launched BOHR (Betavoltaic Orbital High-Reliability) aboard its Transporter-17 rideshare mission from California. Developed by City Labs, BOHR is being described as the world's first commercial nuclear-powered satellite and the first nuclear CubeSat ever launched.
Unlike NASA's deep-space spacecraft, BOHR does not use a nuclear reactor. Instead, it carries a tiny tritium-powered betavoltaic battery that converts energy from radioactive decay into a small but continuous supply of electricity. The satellite still relies on solar panels for its main operations, while the nuclear system is being tested as a proof of concept.
If the technology performs as expected in orbit, it could transform the future of space exploration by powering small satellites, lunar sensors, and spacecraft operating in places where sunlight is limited or unavailable. Results from the demonstration are expected in the coming weeks and months.
While this is only an experimental mission, experts see it as an important milestone toward long-lasting, low-maintenance power systems for future commercial space missions.
