9 times out of 10, a new client has a birthdate stuck in their head.

“67, because that’s full retirement age.”

“65, because of Medicare.”

“62, Social Security kicks in and I’m tired of the grind.”

The only thing here is these dates aren’t really your dates; they’re dates the Government picked out for you.

Every time, when we run YOUR numbers; savings rate, spending, investments, projections, etc., your real retirement date is different than expected.

I’ve told clients proudly they could stop working at 55 and watched them smile ear to ear thinking they had another 5+ years to grind out.

No, no, no — Please don’t say that.

I hate hearing this so much.

It’s not that you want to fast-forward your kids growing up, obviously, it’s just you want to fast-forward all of the financial stress during this period.

You’re earning more than you ever have, mid-high six figures, and everyone's maxed out.

Somewhere in there, people lose track of their own Due North.

Let's pause, stop for a second and reflect: “What matters right now? Not in 30 years. Right now?”

If this sounds like you and you could use the help and guidance from a full-service financial partner, please connect. We’re currently welcoming new clients.

Can you relate?

We have many clients in this situation, and it’s almost harder to get them to step-back and spend some of what they’re earning, than it is to get someone those spending too much to spend less.

Two high earners, kind of addicted or stuck to the routine. They have great jobs, great income, great kids, but literally zero bandwidth left over.

This is the time of year that we’re really pushing them to unwind and mentally reset.

Great financial planning is about building a great life that allows you to live financially secure and responsibly, not save every penny and try and stack to infinity.

If this sounds like you and you could use the help and guidance from a full-service financial partner, please to connect. We’re currently welcoming new clients.

Utility, passion — or Joneses?

We love helping our clients figure out the finances around things that provide utility and/or bring them passion, absolutely love it.

However, we really dislike when we sense there’s an element of the Joneses involved.

The core idea is knowing whether a purchase serves a real passion or is just keeping up with someone else's lifestyle.

The pool example. Same pool, same neighborhood, two totally different decisions.

One family (family A) is home all the time; they spend a ton of time together and have three kids 12 and under. The other family, (family B) is always on the go, full travel sports and when not, they’re vacationing away from the house. Kids are similar ages.

Of course, we could justify family B getting and wanting the $100,000 pool, but do they want it only because it seems like it makes sense likely because family A just had one installed?

Sometimes taking some guidance and a step back is all you need to see things a little differently.

Maybe that same $100k that family B might have used on that pool, could and should be used to maximize and enhance those family vacations? Maybe just having a third party help you recognize that you’re not even home that often enough to get the real utility out of it?

These decisions are never really wrong, most times it’s just taking a look at it from a different angle.

Car, boat, country club membership, pool, ask yourself, “Is this our passion, or might we be caught up in what’s trendy for others?”

Spend BIG on what YOU love.

Financial advisors want fun things too…

I loved it.

I was in Arizona recently for some client meetings and decided to rent a Porsche for a week.

I’ve always had my eye on one but never jumped behind the wheel so I though why not, let’s see how this feels and if this is something that I might actually consider?

It was everything I thought it’d be. Tight, fast, extremely well crafted, luxury, all the things.

But keeping it real with you all, it was much more enjoyable giving the keys back than it was considering the six-figure buy.

Bringing it back to business, we have this conversation with clients all the time.

Will the enjoyment last, beyond that test drive?

For some purchases it does and will, for others not so much: A dream car, boat, pool in the backyard, second home in Florida for the winters.

Rent the second home for a season before you buy it. Rent the boat for a week, rent the dream car, ask your neighbor or brother-in-law about the pool. Try to forecast how you’ll feel when the sticker wears off.

If it still feels worth it in your gut, let’s plan for it and buy it, if not, great, you tried it.

This 4th of July, may your budget survive the fireworks aisle 🎆

Hot tip: just because it explodes doesn’t mean it’s a good investment 😉

I promise you’re leaving something on the table.

If you can relate, just consider this:

We see it all the time guys, that period when the income really ratchets up.

Please take advantage of these years, your future you will love you for it.

We don’t need to budget you down to the dollar, we just want to put a financial plan in place to ensure the things that need to be funded, get funded.

You’ll still live, still vacation, still have a nice car, still have nice things…

We’re just going to properly fund the future priorities first.

I don't hear ANYONE complaining about spending too much money and too much time in the years of raising kids and being in the heart of life.

It's always the opposite.

The ones who over-saved and lived frugal waiting for "someday" are often the ones who look back and wish they'd gone home earlier, thrown the baseball in the yard more, taken the extra trip.

Nobody HAS EVER sat across from me and said: "I'm so glad we didn't take that family vacation."

Not once.

What I hear is the opposite.

- They wish they'd gotten home a little earlier.
- Thrown the baseball in the yard more.
- Made the trip happen instead of pushing it to next year.

There's a version of "responsible saving" that quietly costs you the years that matter most.

A real financial plan makes room for right now: While your kids are young, your health is good, and your career is at full stride.

If your advisor has never once encouraged you to spend money and enjoy your life, please consider a conversation with us.
