She'd been in therapy for two years. He hadn't been in a single session. The money fights that used to feel equal started to feel very different.

She could see the patterns underneath the argument. He was still in the fight the way they'd always fought it. And she was sitting across from him with two years of language and awareness he didn't have yet.

This is what happens when one partner starts doing the internal work and the other hasn't.

The person who grows develops a kind of clarity that creates a new loneliness inside the relationship.

Money is where it shows up most visibly, because money is where everything underneath a relationship eventually surfaces.

For the Love & Money™ is for couples who want to do this work together.

During COVID she asked her advisor to move her money out of the market. He said no. She wasn't asking for a recommendation. She was asking him to execute an instruction on her own account.

He said no because he was a broker dealer, not a fiduciary. Under his standard he had discretion. She thought she had control over her own money. She didn't have the control she thought she had.

Her account dropped significantly while she watched in real time.

She wasn't angry at the market. She was angry that nobody had explained what she was actually agreeing to when she signed.

A broker dealer isn't legally required to act in your best interest. A fiduciary is. The difference between those two relationships has a real cost. She paid it.

She spent eleven years paying more in taxes than she had to. No fraud. No negligence. Just no one in her corner showing her a different structure was available.

Her AGI sat at her full salary for over a decade. No optimized retirement contributions. No entity structure. Deductions never applied. A tax situation built for convenience, not for her.

The difference between an accountant and a fiduciary working in coordination with your tax strategy: one tells you what you owe. The other builds the structure that changes what you owe before the calculation happens.

Same income. Different structure. Different outcome.

The version of you that learned about money was a child.

The beliefs running your financial decisions now were formed by a child making the best possible interpretation of what they saw.

That child wasn't wrong.

They built a map that made sense for that territory. The problem is the territory changed and the map didn't. You have access now that child didn't, information, perspective, and choice.

The most powerful thing you can do with that is ask honestly: did I choose this belief, or did I absorb it?

I bought a necklace and bracelet from Tiffany and took them back the same day.

The finances were fine. The purchase was reasonable. But a feeling arrived on the walk home that I couldn't name at the time: that spending real money on something purely for myself required a level of self-permission I hadn't actually given myself.

I could spend on others easily. On needs. On things that served a purpose.

But something just for me?

The resistance was immediate and the justifications came fast.

That's what the trauma of money looks like when it's quiet. When it doesn't show up as a crisis. When it shows up as a Tiffany bag you're carrying back to the store.

Unworthiness is one of the most underdiagnosed financial patterns I see. It drives under-investment in self, over-investment in everyone else, and a complicated relationship with what you allow yourself to have.

Let's Do the Math: Episode 4.

Travis Scott paid $23.5 million cash for a Brentwood mansion at 28. $23.5M invested at 7% from age 28 to 65 becomes $335 million.

Two things compound the cost. Age: at 28 the compounding window is still enormous, and buying the visible asset at that moment is the most expensive version of the status script there is.

Cash: paying outright for a lifestyle asset while locking capital out of the market is the opposite of how the wealthiest investors use money.

He negotiated the listing from $42M down to $23.5M. The deal was sharp. The asset class was the question.

Is the visible purchase serving the financial life or replacing it?

The question almost nobody asks before getting engaged: what does financial security feel like to you?

Two people can both want financial security and mean completely different things.

One needs three months liquid. The other needs two years.

One feels secure when the lifestyle reflects the income. The other feels secure when the lifestyle is well below it.

If you've never compared those definitions you'll spend years arguing about financial decisions that make perfect sense to each of you individually.

The fight is never about the purchase.

It's about one person's definition of safety colliding with another's in real time with shared money.

For the Love & Money™ is built for that conversation before anything becomes shared.

She negotiated a $90,000 raise and never told her family.

Every time income became visible in her life, the requests followed.

So she learned to keep it quiet, changed nothing visible, and put every dollar of the difference somewhere nobody could see.

What she'd built over years was a financial strategy that actually worked.

Generosity without boundaries becomes an obligation.

Protecting your financial progress sometimes looks like silence.

What I asked her was whether the silence was serving her or exhausting her.

There's a version of financial privacy that's protection. And a version that's isolation.

They look identical from the outside.

She received an inheritance and her first feeling was dread.

The money arrived and she called me three days later, afraid to touch it, afraid to move it, afraid to make a mistake.

Her whole life, unexpected money had found a way out of her family's hands. So her nervous system treated a windfall not as relief but as threat.

The inheritance didn't create that pattern. It activated it at a scale she'd never experienced.

We didn't touch the money for eight weeks. We worked on the feeling first.

Eight weeks later she made one decision.

Then another.

The money is still there. Working.

That's what financial healing looks like sometimes.

Not a plan. Permission.

She presented a cash flow problem. Income good. Expenses manageable. But never enough.

The math said there should have been a surplus. It wasn't there.

When I asked what happened when the account balance dropped below a certain number she said: "I panic. Even if I know a deposit is coming. Something shifts and I can't think straight."

That's not a cash flow problem.

That's fear wearing a cash flow problem's clothes.

A cash flow problem and a belief problem look identical from the outside. The diagnosis changes everything about what the treatment looks like.
